(RG @telaharchive): When I was in Iran last year I a friend there asked to give them a low down on Canadian politics, what’s the tea. At the time, the most majo...r outrage we were facing was Trudeau’s approval of the pipeline. My friend laughed. That’s it? Your government is digging up some land and ours is killing innocent people for speaking their mind I haven’t stopped thinking about that. This is not to say the situation in Canada is fine because of the comparison. It’s not (I don’t support the pipeline). But we need to understand what life is like beyond our borders, and across oceans. As some of you may know, I’m in-production making a podcast about my dad’s journey as a refugee; he left Iran amidst the Iranian Revolution and had to escape illegally. I’ve interviewed friends and family about this time and many were activists who had warrants out for their arrest so that they could be sentenced to death - they had to hide underground, abandon their families, and flee the country. This is the cost of expressing your basic human needs in Iran. You will hear this story from MANY Iranians living in Canada. Maybe not your friends but their parents. You love our food and our carpets and our people are everywhere you go, wherever you work.
