Wooowww! It has been a minute! August and September flew by! Between harvesting the gardens, prepping for winter, and starting up and getting into the rhythm of the school year (I teach middle school!) I haven’t had much time to pop on here. ... Now it’s time to buckle down and focus on my studies. I’ve got books to read and papers to write!

One major part of a Doula’s role is to support you physically. What does that look like? There are many ways a doula can provide physical support. It looks different for every mama. But here are a FEW of the most common ways:... Gentle massaging and touch to help you relax Applying Counter pressure on your lower back and hips ( double hip squeeze for the win!) Helping you with different labouring positions and comfort techniques- could be using the rebozo, peanut or birthing ball, sheets, or whatever you have on hand! Guiding you in breathing techniques And encouraging your partner to get involved with all of it! Physical touch is often very helpful in helping you relax and get that oxytocin flowing!

Their purpose is to help mothers have a safe, positive, and memorable birth experience. A birth doula is often referred to as a labour support companion. If we don’t have the time to go in depth, I will often just explain my role that way. But if we have the time, I love expanding on what we do and why we do it! Over the next few weeks, I’m going to go more in depth explaining what physical, emotional, and informational support looks like! I’m curious...had you ever heard of a doula before??

The other day, I got the opportunity to have coffee with another doula in my area. I arrived feeling quite nervous, but left feeling SO grateful! The amount of support and wisdom I received was invaluable. She happily answered my hundreds of questions, welcomed me with open arms, and made me feel a part of the team ... I love being a part of this pregnancy and birth community. And I’m excited to constantly learn more from the incredible birth workers around me!
