Our Meibukan community has two great and important weekends coming up: black belt gradings will be conducted at the Winnipeg dojo on the weekend of February 24th/25th, and on Saturday, March 10th. Our dojo will be represented with 4 candidates from the adult class and one candidate from the children's class. Best wishes to all the candidates! A brief reminder to all students of the St. Vital dojo that the dojo will be closed on Saturday, February 24th. Regular classes will resume on Monday, February 26th.
On Friday, November 26, 2017, the Winnipeg Dojo hosted a long awaited grading, celebrating the accomplishments of their own students as well as students of the St. Vital dojo. Overall, we had 16 grading candidates from the St. Vital dojo: 13 children and 3 adults. In the children's class, we now have 3 new yellow belts, 2 new green belts, 1 new blue belt, 6 new brown belts, and 1 new 1st kyu. In the adult class, we now have 1 new green belt, 1 new brown belt, and 1 new 1st kyu. Great job, everyone! Congratulations!
On Saturday, November 11th is Remembrance Day. The dojo will be closed, in REMEMBRANCE of all those who have been, and who are, risking and giving their lives that we may live in peace in a free country. LEST WE FORGET.
This day a year ago, our beloved Sensei Kim Marshall passed away, after a long and courageous fight against his illness. Kim Sensei lived in the spirit of Karate and was an example and inspiring mentor to many. Being at the same time a warrior and a very kindhearted person, he showed us the true meaning of "Goju". We miss you very much, Kim Sensei. Thank you for everything! http://passages.winnipegfreepress.com//i/MARSHALL_KIMBERLY
On the weekend August 18th 20th, our 20th annual Karate Camp took place at St. Malo Provincial Park. The weather was perfect throughout and there were virtually no bugs! The Saturday was dedicated to exploring various kata and to weapons training. On Sunday, we did a sequence of all our kata (classical and Meibukan) in tai-chi slow motion to the accompaniment of soft meditative music. Thank you to Scott Knight for providing the music for this Sunday morning session, and for the Friday evening dance party! Thank you also to the Knight family for once again providing ice-cold bottled water for all our karate-ka.
Happy 150th Birthday, Canada!
On Saturday, June 17th, we met for a farewell brunch for our fellow Karate-Ka Yi. Yi just got married (congratulations again!) :) and is now moving to Indianapolis with her husband. We will miss you very much, Yi, your kind ways and your big smile and we wish both of you all the best for the future. Keep in touch!
In May 2017, quite a number of our students were promoted to their next belt rank. In the Adult Class, we have 1 new yellow belt and 4 new orange belts. In the Children's Class, we have 1 new yellow belt, 2 new orange belts, and 2 new green belts. Congratulations, everyone!
On Friday, February 17th, 2017, Meibukan Goju Karate hosted a Karate Night for the Youth Group of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. It was a good combination of learning and fun, of devotional and fellowship times (with food, of course!!!) Everyone had a great time!
The upcoming weekend will be a long weekend with Monday, February 20th, being Louis Riel Day. Please remember that the dojo will be closed for the long weekend. There will be NO CLASSES on Saturday, February 18th, and on Monday, February 20th. Regular classes will resume on Tuesday, February 21st.
Hopefully, everyone had a good start into 2017. It is great to see so many of you braving the cold, the snow, and the icy roads, in order to attend class. Even more so as the dojo is increasingly difficult to find behind (or under ??) the mountains of snow... :) Please be sure to be warm and safe at all times!
In November 2016, the Winnipeg Dojo hosted a big grading, for students of the Winnipeg and the St. Vital Dojos. The grading was conducted by Sensei Mike, Director of the Winnipeg Dojo, and Sensei Ryan, Director of the St. Vital Dojo. We especially remembered and honoured Sensei Kim. He would have been so proud of everyone! In the St. Vital Dojo, we now have in the Children's Class 2 new yellow belts, 1 new orange belt, 6 new blue belts, 1 new brown belt, and 2 new 1st kyu students. In the Adult Class, we now have 3 new yellow belts, 2 new blue belts, and 1 new brown belt. Congratulations, everyone!

On the weekend August 12 - 14, 2016, our 20th annual Karate Camp took place at St. Malo Provincial Park. We explored various kata, and trained with some of the Okinawan weapons: bo and sai. We enjoyed our time together - and perfect weather, too! A big Thank-You goes to the Knight family for donating bottled water (nice and cold) for all our karate-ka, and to the Todd family for donating the pickerel for the fish fry. Your kindness and generosity is much appreciated! Sensei Kim was with us in spirit - and even managed to join us (by phone) for our bow-in on Saturday morning. We often talk about the "Spirit of Karate". It certainly has been very evident at St. Malo!
In July, we did a photo shooting for our new website. Here are some of the extras. Enjoy!
In June, Akihito Sensei traveled all the way from Okinawa to Winnipeg. On June 22nd, he honored our St. Vital dojo with a visit. It was a great class, followed by fun social time. Thank you, Sensei, for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Domo aregato!
On May 13th/14th, 2016, the long awaited black belt gradings were conducted at the Winnipeg dojo. Among the candidates were our very own Sarah and Eric. Everyone did a great job. Sarah was awarded the rank of Nidan, and Eric that of Shodan. Congratulations to both of you - we are very proud of you!
Update: What does "Summertime" mean ? It means t-shirts and training in the park and karate camp. On Thursdays, we will train in St. Vital Park 6:00 - 7:30 PM (weather permitting). Remember to bring water bottles, sun screen, bug spray. Also hats, sun glasses, shoes/sandals as needed. For the summertime, you can wear your Meibukan t_shirt instead of your gi top. Karate camp is scheduled for mid August to take place in St. Malo Provincial Park.
On May 11, 2016, our Dojo saw a big grading ceremony - and a massive change of colours. In the Children's Class, we now have 2 new yellow belts, 3 new orange belts, and 6 new green belts. In the Adult Class, we have 1 new yellow belt, 2 new green belts, and 1 new blue belt. Congratulations, everyone!
Exciting days in May - Dojo Schedule: There is a Black Belt grading coming up, and then the May long weekend. Please note that there will be NO CLASSES at the St. Vital Dojo on the following days: May 14th (Saturday), May 21st (Saturday), and May 23rd (Monday). Best wishes to Sarah and Eric for their grading - and a safe and wonderful May long weekend to all! :-)
DOJO SCHEDULE The dojo will be closed on Saturday, March 26th, as it is the Easter weekend. However, we will be open during Spring Break and have regular classes throughout the week. Wishing everyone a happy Easter - and wishing those travelling over Easter or during Spring Break a safe journey!
