Happy New Year Dojo Family! It has been A. Year. Every new year we talk about looking back and reflecting on the gifts and lessons of the previous year. Though it may seem harder or even crazy for the year we just had, I can’t stop thinking about how 2020 gave me some pretty incredible gifts. ... -I was gifted so much time with family, including two teenagers I never would have seen as much, and though we were always close, we have all gotten so much closer as a result. -I was blessed and humbled by how truly amazing our community was in supporting us through TWO shut downs and all of the changes that had to happen. -I learned (by force at first) that I could be more flexible. -I became more tech savvy including learning how to make a YouTube channel that not only forced me to focus more thoroughly on my own kata practice but also had a humbling response. -I was reminded that any floor truly can do in a pinch as karate is so much more than a place. It is the people and an intrinsic journey. Our character as karateka was truly tested and further developed this year, reaching out, giving back, building resilience, etc. And most importantly: -It forced me to SLOW DOWN and focus on what truly matters. It feels funny to say this as there were so many frantic blips of panicked stress this year, but overall looking back, I feel an overwhelming sense of clarity on where my focus needs to stay moving forward into 2021 and beyond. My sincerest wish for myself and Everyone is be able to maintain that focus as life slowly returns to normal (which it will!) Slow down, stay connected, live in the moment, be resilient, be grateful. I will be eternally grateful to 2020, this dumpster fire of a year, for these lessons and I am ready to carry them forward into 2021 and am excited and honoured to do it with all of you. After a tremendous amount of contemplation, in an abundance of caution, and in accordance with many of the organizations and institutions throughout Winnipeg & Manitoba, I feel that it is no longer an option but for us at Meibukan Gojyu Karate Winnipeg to also do our part in helping ensure that we lessen the impact and the spread of this new and highly contagious virus. As such, it is with a heavy heart that I inform all of you that the Winnipeg Dojo will be closed and classe...s suspended effective immediately until April 13 inclusive (subject to re-evaluation). This is an uncertain and challenging time for everyone but I believe if we all do our part and support one another, we will get through this. Now is not the time for fear and panic but it is the time to act and to do what we can to protect our older and more vulnerable population and to be a part of the solution. I hope that everyone will continue their training at home. It is also my hope that we will all do our best to practice the virtues of true Karateka. Be helpful and take care of each other, reach out to elderly family and neighbours in need. Stay calm and centered and practice self-care both emotionally and physically. Be true leaders in your families and communities and guide with integrity and rational perspective. Please remember that I am always here for all of you during this stressful time.
