In preparing for the "Self-Care for Singles Meetup" this Sunday, I was reviewing my notes from workshops past. I was reminded that most of us believe the timeframe for forming new habits is 21 days... it's actually 66 days! I guess my no sugar/no flour 40-day challenge has just been extended to 66! Here's an article that discusses this and an excerpt from it: "On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic 66 days to be exact. And how long i...t takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. In Lally's study, it took anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a new habit. In other words, if you want to set your expectations appropriately, the truth is that it will probably take you anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behavior into your life not 21 days." https://jamesclear.com/new-habit It can be very satisfying to choose a new healthy habit and work toward developing it! What habit do you need to form?

Fighting Seasonal Affective Disorder TIP#1. As a person who has suffered from depression and SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the past, the change in season took me a bit by surprise this year. In recent years, I started taking Vitamin D (up to 4,000 IUs are recommended but check with your doctor) in late August to get it in my system before the clouds settled in, the days got shorter, and my sunshine went away for days at a time! We had smokey late summers in Kelowna whi...ch reminded me to start that early, but Victoria was so sunny and I really enjoyed alot of sunlight and fresh air this fall and I forgot to get my Vitamin D on. So when the weather changed, so did the immediate impact of the heavy rains, and shorter days. No major symptoms because I've learned to implement a number of things that are helpful and made alot of changes, just a knowing that I need to do what I've done in years past to combat the lack of sunlight. So I got my Vitamin D... and I thought I'd send out a friendly reminder for those of you who might feel a bit "heavy" these days that this is something you CAN do to fight back. Take care and do things to make sure you can enjoy your life! Melanie P.S. Workshops on Seasonal Affective Disorder for November to be announced soon!
