Meldrum Bay Mourns the Passing of the Former Mayor. The Family Fun Day was cancelled this year due to the passing of one of Meldrum Bay's prominent residents, Dale Van Every. Dale was a young 85 years of age and often fondly referred to as the mayor of Meldrum. Dale was born and raised on the family farm. He left the island to find work in Hamilton and raised his family, son Scott, and daughters Cheryl and Lynn with his wife Joan (Duncanson) in Grimsby. After thirty long ye...ars he and Joan returned to the island where he spent the rest of his life. Dale was always very involved in his community, spending countless hours volunteering with everything that needed to be done. During his time as president of the Dawson Citizens Improvement Association he was the driving force behind the construction of the new marina breakwall which is greatly appreciated by all those boaters who used to risk their boats and lives in docking at the old marina docks. Another great passion that came to fruition through Dale's efforts was the installation of the cell phone tower providing service to the area. His list of accomplishments is too long to post here, but you could always see him cruising around with his big smile, his brother Don alongside, oftentimes with Dave Clarke travelling as the third amigo, helping with the docks, or keeping the family farm going, making maple syrup, and generally having fun. Dale was the chef extraordinaire at the Meldrum Bay pig roasts. Every Sunday morning he was there to ring the church bell and call the locals to the service. He had a passion for Meldrum Bay and could always be counted on to pitch in and help with any project. I never got to know his phone number. Never needed it. He could always be flagged down or asked for help during his cruising around checking things out, or walking next door to ask a question or borrow a tool. And his tractor was always available. He will be greatly missed by friends and family and even by those that never knew him but benefited from what he did for this community. See more
