Zimbabwe Chainsaw Project A common complaint about humanitarian work around the world is that it is like driving a car into a crowd of starving people, throwing food to them through open windows and then driving on. It does nothing to solve the real problem of ongoing community sustainability. MEMO and the people we support are truly involved in creating sustainable community development. In Zimbabwe, due to many factors, previously productive farmland has become overgrown an...d unusable for crops. Trees have replaced harvestable food crops that had sustained villages. One small farm however, has been supported by the Zimbabwe Gecko Society. https://zimbabwegecko.com/ Working with the community, a home for 600 AIDs orphans was built along with an elementary school, medical clinic, carpentry school, seamstress school and facilities to raise chickens, goats and pigs. In addition, sustainable farming methods were taught resulting in harvests of healthy vegetables for the school and community. Because of this effort to build up the health and vitality of the community, the government has provided a large parcel of land for additional development. Much of the land is overgrown with mature trees, some of which must be harvested so the land can be farmed for food. Lumber from the trees will be used in the carpentry shop while the rest will be used by the community. Felling trees manually is not easy. MEMO is planning to ship a container of supplies MARCH 27 to Zimbabwe for the Zimbabwe Gecko Society to use in their efforts to support this community and many others. IF YOU OR YOUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS HAVE CHAINSAWS THAT ARE NOT BEING USED, PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING THEM TO MEMO TO BE INCLUDED IN THIS CONTAINER ON MARCH 27TH. We have a small engine mechanic who will ensure the chainsaws are in top operating condition. Hardhats, safety clothing, safety goggles, sharpening tools etc. are also needed to ensure safe work habits are followed. We still need $8,000 to finish covering shipping costs of $23,000, but the GOOD NEWS is we have a donor who will MATCH EVERY DOLLAR up to a total of $8,000 for this container. When you donate to MEMO, you can be assured that every dollar and every item will be used to develop skills and support healthy, vital communities with those we serve. To donate a chainsaw or equipment, call Jerome at 627-6360. To donate toward shipping, go to https://www.efccm.ca/word/donate/latin-america/projectmemo/ Thanks so much for your support, Jerome Harvey

Good evening all; It was another successful packing day for MEMO, loading container #91. For me, in the time involved with MEMO, I am always impressed with how everyone comes together to make things happen. Everyone 'rallies' as it were. Thanks again to all those who hauled truckloads of stuff, those who packed the container (Dave, Bevans, Paul) under Dave March's able direction, heaved heavy boxes, climbed into the bins of bags to remove them, teetered on the edge of the lad...der to tie up a hockey net at the ceiling, made food, tallied inventory numbers, cracked a few jokes and generally made a cool day warm. A few pictures are included. They don't reflect the many hands (of about 15 people, including some high school and university students) but give a sample of some of the things done. Thank you all. Tom Baxter, Director of Operations (for Jerome and MEMO)

Hello MEMO friends, We have all been waiting to hear how much the October 18th MEMO fundraiser generated. I am pleased to announce that $25,800 was raised. This will pay the $17,000 shipping costs plus $3000 for purchasing the container for Zimbabwe.... We had planned to ship the container in the spring but because our storage capacity was completely stuffed we decided to ship November 21st to make room for new donations over the winter. The remaining $5,800 will go towards shipping a container to Cuba when we receive Cuban government authorization. This is an amazing feat, when so many charities are struggling to survive because of reduced giving in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. We thank God for moving in so many of your hearts to give generously to allow us to send aid to our suffering Zimbabwean brothers and sisters. Some of what we are sending is critical medically, like suturing materials and fetal dopplers to listen to prenatal babies hearts. Other supplies are desperately needed to meet everyday living needs. Dr. Paul Thistle wrote and told us there are many couples in his area (Karanda Hospital) who would like to get married but can’t because they can’t afford the costs, particularly buying wedding dresses. This container includes 17 gorgeous wedding dresses from a business owner here in Thunder Bay! This successful fundraiser is another affirmation that we are following God’s will in not closing down due to the pandemic. God’s work, done in God’s way, will not lack God’s support.- Hudson Taylor founder of the China Inland Mission (now OMF, Overseas Missionary Fellowship).
