The Department of Chemistry is proud of all of our outstanding #WomenInScience, from our students, to our staff to our faculty. You are all great mentors and leaders.
Reminder of Monday's deadline. Have a good weekend!
Congratulations to Dr. George Margoutidis on his paper in press in the journal Cellulose. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10570-021-03679-z It describes solubility studies performed on chitin (a carbohydrate isolated from crab and shrimp shells). Dr. Margoutidis graduated from Dr. Kerton's group in 2019 and is now working for a biodiesel company.
Congratulations to Monther Zreid and Zahra A. Tabasi in Prof. Zhao's group on their recent research results on non-covalent interactions in pyrene and related molecules. This work has just been published in Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/poc.4192
Dr Kerton (Memorial University) is a member of the CIRCUIT training centre for CO2 Utilisation. Take a look at the carbon emissions around the world via the carbon atlas. Undergraduate and Graduate Students can apply to be part of this program.

Congratulations to Jennifer Murphy, a graduate of the Kerton group, whose paper on a sponge-like material from waste mussel shells has been published in the journal Matter.
Dr. Liqin Chen, Memorial chemistry PhD graduate and total winner, is profiled in this article.
It’s #Halloween tomorrow! Why is blood red and why does it have a metallic smell? This graphic explains! https://www.compoundchem.com/2015/10/29/blood/
Dr. Jennifer Murphy's research on sponge-like materials from mussel shells has been profiled in the prestigious venue, Materials Today! https://www.materialstoday.com//absorbent-sponges-made-fr/
Today is #MoleDay! Learn more about the mole and why it's useful in chemistry with this updated graphic: https://www.compoundchem.com/2014/10/23/moleday/
qualiTEAS, founded by two Chem grads (David Gale and Abhijit Chatterjee), was a winner at the 2020 Ocean Startup Challenge. Congrats qualiTEAS.
Congratulations to Professor Heather Reader for her new publication on dissolved organic matter, which has been published in the journal Biogeochemistry. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10533-020-00703-5
It's #NationalChemistryWeek, and this year the theme is 'Sticking With Chemistry'. Here's the sticky science of superglue! https://www.compoundchem.com/2015/10/15/superglue/
