Happy holidays to each of you out there in our community. The holidays are a complex time . For some, it is a time of joy and connection. For others, it is a time when maintaining our mental health can become extremely challenging. Perhaps for many of us, it is a little bit of both. Our holiday wish to all of you is that you are accepted for where you are at right now, that how you feel is validated and heard, and that you are treated with kindness and care during the holidays.

The Men’s Therapy Centre would like to officially welcome Nick Sandor as the new Executive Director of our organization. We are excited to have him join our team as we continue our mission to support survivors of trauma and provide emotional support for our community members. Nick Sandor (He/Him) is a settler on the traditional, unceded Coast Salish Territories, specifically of the Lekwungen and WSÁNEC peoples. Over the past decade, his work in community support services has... included youth housing and outreach, sexual health education, and anti-violence facilitation. Nick (BSW /MA) completed his graduate studies at the University of Victoria researching intersections of masculinities and social justice-based community work. Nick comes to MTC after spending the last six years as the creator and program coordinator of Man Made, a school-based psycho-educational program that helped masculine-identifying folks to connect with healthy expressions of masculinity, emotional wellness, and relationship skills development. We are excited about the experience and knowledge that he brings to our organization. Nick is enthusiastic to continue his work with masculine-identifying, non-binary, and two-spirit community members with the MTC team. He is also grateful to work alongside other practitioners who believe social change can be achieved through emotional support. He believes that through kindness, understanding, and connection, masculinity can be transformed to align with the values of equity, social accountability, and healthy relationships across differences. To connect with Nick about our services please email [email protected].

HEY! My name is Jill Van Gyn and I'm the founder and CEO of Fatso. 10 years ago today I made the decision to enter recovery from drugs and alcohol. On August 14...th, 2010, at 30 years old, sick, suicidal, and at a desperate rock bottom, I asked for help and that call was answered by my family and by those in the recovery community. I was one of the lucky ones. I was afforded some of the best rehab care in Canada and was received by a loving and steadfast group of fellow addicts. The only reason I am not dead, institutionalized, or in jail is because I was born with immense privilege. Our communities are suffering from a massive overdose crisis and rampant addiction. Addiction and recovery need to be normalized, regardless of background, upbringing, or circumstance. Those experiencing homelness, people who have been barred from mainstream privileges, and addicts who break the "law" in order to survive, feel dignity, or exercise power, deserve recovery, deserve compassion, and deserve a strong social response, like any other suffering in the grips of a life-threatening disease. We may not like the symptoms. They are often ugly and harmful. But I was an addict. I was ugly. I was harmful. I am only where I am today because I had access. Yes, I worked hard. I hated recovery for the first year and swore I would go out again. But I found hope and gratitude in the rooms of a 12 Step program. It's not for everyone - that's just where I found my lifeline. Once I got on my feet I offered help to other addicts because it was so freely given to me. Of all the wonderful things I’ve achieved in the past decade- an amazing spouse, a much longed for baby, a loving relationship with my family, a masters degree, a dream job, and rad sneakers- it is the self-acceptance and reconciliation with my past that I treasure the most. If you or someone you know could use help or you just need a chat DM me and we'll set up a call. I will tell you how I did it. Recovery is possible. #legalizedrugs #yesallofthem #harmreduction #recoveryispossible See more

Doug Mackie founded the first Canadian shed in 2011 in Winnipeg. Doug recognized that many men in his community had both time on their hands and a tendency to suffer from isolation, loneliness, and depression. This was especially true after they retired as many men tie big parts of their identities to their careers. Since starting MenSheds Manitoba, Doug has helped men come together, stay productive, and contribute to the communityall of which are keys to good overall health. Visit @https://menssheds.ca/
