SPACE: The BAU | Functioning Circuits: GreenPort 5 April 5 June 2021 Black Artists Union (BAU) in collaboration with Kanna Anigbogu illustrate the ethos of GreenPort Cannabis: Healing, Community, Growth and Unity.... Mercer Union’s SPACE billboard commission has invited The Black Artists Union (BAU) for its 2020-21 season. Their project, Functioning Circuits, gathers functionality in art through a series of advertisements made collaboratively with The BAU commissioned artists and businesses found within its communities. Functioning Circuits: GreenPort is the third billboard in the yearlong series. Contextualizing their commission is an accompanying text below, written by members Ekow Stone and Filmon Yohannes, that reflects on the future, the present and the past through a journal entry in which the personal thoughts and experiences of an archivist named Yanira bring us into dialogue with an elder. The BAU is an artist collective supporting the works of Black artists and creatives within the diaspora aiming to be a place where Black art can exist in function with its community. GreenPort Cannabis, founded by Vivianne Wilson, is a Black-owned local dispensary located on 868 College Street that aims to be a cultural hub where people can practice mindful cannabis consumption. Kanna Anigbogu is a Toronto-based Nigerian artist with a distinctive style of linework and gestural imagery. His work combines movement, overlay, playful experimentation, Igbo inspiration, and mystery to tell stories rich with ambiance and feeling. Anigbogu creates imaginative abstract pieces on the human condition, spirit and the wonders of everyday life. SPACE invites one artist to produce a yearlong series of images for a public-facing billboard located on the east façade of Mercer Union. Erdem Tadelen: A Minaret for the General’s Wife 21 November 2020 27 February 2021 Pre-book your visit here: rb.gy/xvvswn We are excited to present Erdem Tadelen's solo exhibition, A Minaret for the General's Wife.... The starting point for Tadelen’s commissioned work is a little-known architectural oddity located in the Lithuanian city of Kdainiai. Built in 1880 and restored in 2007, this structure is a freestanding Ottoman-style minaret that peculiarly has no mosque below or attached to it. In A Minaret for the General's Wife, the minaret becomes a metaphor for that potent feeling of being corporeally out of place, for structures built in locations where they seemingly don’t belongin other words; displacement, appropriation and extractivism. At Mercer Union, Tadelen presents primary sources, translations and fabulations referencing the Kdainiai Minaret in equal measure, compelling the viewer to consider the confounding dichotomy between the authenticity of a material record and the myriad truths spoken by subjective experience. Erdem Tadelen is a Turkish-Canadian artist who lives and works in Toronto. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions internationally and across Canada, most recently at venues including Blackwood Gallery, Mississauga; AKA artist-run, Saskatoon (2020); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen (2019); and VOX Centre de l’image contemporaine, Montreal (2018). Tadelen has been awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize in Visual Arts by the Canada Council for the Arts (2016), the Charles Pachter Prize for Emerging Artists by the Hnatyshyn Foundation (2014), and was long-listed for the Sobey Art Award in 2019. A Minaret for the General's Wife is commissioned by Mercer Union and SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre). This exhibition is made possible with Leading Support from RBC Insurance and Support from SAHA Association, Istanbul. Leading Support for Public Engagement is generously provided by the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts. Erdem Tadelen would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and Rupert, Lithuania. isthmus | September Update Arriving Elsewhere "How to respond to crisis? Who is expected to respond to what? What expectations can you refuse? How can you find the right time to meet when you dont wake up together?... Los Angeles at 11am, Toronto & New York at 2pm, Madrid & Berlin & Cairo at 8pm, Istanbul & Amman at 9pm. Eleven of us spent ten Tuesdays in a row this summer arriving in a place on the internet, filling it with our images and our voices. Now this uncertain summer is fading into this uncertain autumn. We do not arrive with answers, but can point towards something shared, a deeper entanglement, pressure points and positions that we approached as a group, again." Parastoo Anoushahpour, Faraz Anoushahpour, Ryan Ferko To view the full update on our website: https://www.mercerunion.org/isthmus-summer-2020/ isthmus is a connection; a site forged between places. This collaborative research commission invites artists whose thinking and work are bolstered by peer exchange and participatory forms of knowledge assembly. Presented on the Mercer Union website using Miro, commissioned projects bridge geographies and temporalities between artists, their collaborators and publics; gathering a multiplicity of voices and artefacts while architecting new connections through virtual workshops, tours, screenings and live conversation. The programs first commission features Toronto-based artists and filmmakers Parastoo Anoushahpour, Faraz Anoushahpour and Ryan Ferko. We invite you to follow their project Arriving Elsewhere as it develops over Summer and Fall 2020.

The final episode of this podcast series is a conversation between two friends: Ariana Reines and Sophie Robinson, poets and educators who look to spaces of hospitality for connection and kinship. Whats Love Got To Do With It? is programmed and curated by Beatrice Gibson and produced by Alannah Chance. It is a commission by Bergen Kunsthall; Camden Art Centre, London; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and Mercer Union, a centre for contemporary art, Toronto. The latest episode of What's Love Got To Do With It? is now online! Poets Alice Notley and Precious Okoyomon converse together for the first time to discuss how they tune into interconnectedness, how dreaming together might forge collective states of belonging, and ask each other how love moves them and the world. Sharing their poetry and its rootedness in their personal histories as well as their hopes for the future Notley and Okoyomon render visions of intergenerationa...l lives in continuous acts of translation. Visit our website to tune in to the first episode of What's Love Got To Do With It?, a new podcast series by Beatrice Gibson! This September, artist Beatrice Gibson pairs six contemporary poets discussing the topic of love: CAConrad and LeAnne Howe, Alice Notley and Precious Okoyomon, and Ariana Reines and Sophie Robinson. This three-part podcast series makes sonic space in which these poets share, listen and respond to one anothers work, and features unique compositions by... Crystabel Riley. In the first episode, poets CAConrad and LeAnne Howe share an intensely personal conversation with one another about First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, who insisted she was tormented by an Indigenous Spirit a reminder that her husbands record on racial equality is fraught with violence and oppression; AIDS and loving during the Reagan years; and the new horizons created by the Black Lives Matter movement. Woven through with recitations of their own poetry, the pair reflect upon each others work, growing up with death, and radical love in its many forms. Episodes will be released 4, 11, and 18 September on the websites of Mercer Union, Bergen Kunsthall, Camden Art Centre and KW Institute for Contemporary Art and will be available on all main podcast platforms. http://www.mercerunion.org/exhibit/beatrice-gibson-podcast/

Were reminiscing about late summer days on our patio, and the first iteration of Erdem Tadelens SPACE series, Vicissitudes: Act One (2019). Adapting textual material from the 19th Century text The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations, Vicissitudes situational descriptors suggest ways of looking, offering to the reader a pair of lorgnettes through which the surrounding neighbourhood can become animated, and the goings-on of its people playfully subtitled. Vicissitudes: Act Three... (2020) is currently on display for your distant-viewing pleasure! Image: Erdem Tadelen, Vicissitudes: Act One. Installation view: Mercer Union, 2019. #FBF to Hazel Meyer for MERCER Offsite in 2014. In 2014, as part of the MERCER Offsite exhibition series, Mercer Union partnered with Sunday Drive Art Projects to present a solo project by Hazel Meyer. From the monumental to the modest, Hazel Meyer explores seemingly disparate yet overlapping preoccupations intestines and athletics, feminism and the absurd, anxiety and textiles using scale, language, play, repetition, gentle confrontation and ecstatic immersion.... For this project, Meyer turned the Cow Palacethe site of Warkworths Agricultural Fairinto an after-hours sports club for Muscle Panic, a rogue girls basketball team in need of a space in which to train, scheme, and otherwise spend time together, often at night. Mismatched banners and pennants hang by rafters nodding to the greater spectacle of gymnasium sports over a handcrafted, 14-foot basketball hoop, in a project that explores how we come together, how we sweat together, and how we build the tender, emotional spaces of sport.
