Méridien / Meridian presents: Jennifer Tang In my practice, I explore my hybrid identities by evoking the displacement of time and space. Cultures play an important role in my life, because I was born in the United States to Chinese immigrant parents and raised in both Japan and Canada. I investigate my cultural background with the idea of displacement and absence by juxtaposing moving ...images. As a media-based artist, I use video installation and multi-faceted interactivity to manipulate time and create an otherworldly environment that would otherwise be considered ordinary. Viewers may find my work surreal and calming, because I recreate the elements of dreams and memories that I have experienced. Dans ma pratique, j'explore mes identites hybrides en evoquant le deplacement du temps et de l'espace. Les cultures jouent un role important dans ma vie, car je suis nee aux Etats-Unis de parents immigrants chinois, et j'ai grandi au Japon et au Canada. J'explore mes origines culturelles avec l'idee de deplacement et d'absence en juxtaposant des images en mouvement. En tant qu'artiste mediatique, j'utilise l'installation video et une interactivite a multiples facettes pour manipuler le temps et creer un environnement imaginaire, qui serait autrement considere comme ordinaire. Mon travail peut etre interprete comme surrealiste et apaisant, car je reproduis les elements de reves et de souvenirs que j'ai vecus.

I investigate invisible symptoms that are significant to me. These problems of my body have changed dramatically over the course of a few years. In my acrylic paintings, I exhibit a hidden identity about myself that is unseen to the viewer. This new... perspective creates discourse about the ideas of self-portraiture. Dans ma pratique, j'explore l'inconnue en capturant l'etat medical cache de mon propre corps. J'etudie les symptomes invisibles qui sont important pour moi. Les problemes de mon corps ont change radicalement en quelques annees. Dans mes tableaux, je demontre une identite cachee de moi-meme qui est invisible pour le regardeur. Cette nouvelle perspective cree un discours sur les idees de l'autoportrait.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Madison Rea The discipline that is most explored in my work is sculpture, using mediums such as 3D printing, laser cutting, mouldmaking and the use of found objects. The objective of my work is to study and investigate humanity’s relationship with the natural world. I explore both ecological and technological systems and how these systems are interconnected.... I specifically question how domestication of our environment in the past and the present has played into the power dynamics of the human versus nature relationship and how it is contributing to our social climate today. La discipline la plus exploree dans mon travail est la sculpture, utilisant des mediums tels que l’impression 3D, la decoupe laser, le moulage et l’utilisation d’objets trouves. L’objectif de mon travail est d’etudier et rechercher les relations de l’humanite avec le monde naturel. J'explore les systemes ecologiques et technologiques et la facon dont ces systemes sont interconnectes. Je questionne comment la domestication de notre environnement du passe et present a joue dans la dynamique du pouvoir de la relation humain-nature et dans la maniere dont elle contribue a notre climat social aujourd'hui.

I aim to invoke a general sense of questioning within the viewer when they experience my work. Working through drawing, watercolour, paper cuts, and found materials I combine various characters and elements together to build scenes and interactions that form subtle narratives that are ...not easily interpreted. The characters themselves are generally sourced from photographs, advertisements, and newspapers. Once removed from their context, these elements become unstable and the viewer is no longer sure how they are to relate to them. With this, my intention is to invite viewers into quite emotional worlds that exist on the fringe of our experience. Ma pratique consiste principalement a remettre en question ce que je vois. Je souhaite invoquer un sens general du questionnement chez le regardeur lorsqu'ils voient mon travail. Travaillant en dessin, l'aquarelle, les decoupes de papier et les materiaux trouves, je combine differents personnages et elements pour creer des scenes et des interactions qui forment des recits subtils et difficiles a comprendre. Les personnages proviennent generalement de photographies, d’annonces publicitaires, et de journaux. Une fois retires de leur contexte, ces elements deviennent instables et le regardeur ne sait plus exactement comment ils doivent s'y rapporter. Mon intention est d’inviter les regardeurs dans des mondes emotionnels qui se trouvent en marge de notre experience.

I paint individuals that I have met and have resided with me in some way -- people that have faced hardships that can or cannot be seen by the naked eye. Using different motifs to communicate the individual’s life and painting to combine multipl...e source material, I bring to light their presence in this world. I am not interested in the reality or the technicality of painting; I am interested in the conversation between the subject and the viewer. I use painting to tell the truth about people, to people. Mon travail explore les themes du portrait, et l'element qui qualifie une personne pour etre sujet d’un portrait. Je peins des individus que j'ai rencontrees et qui ont reside avec moi d'une maniere ou d'une autre - des personnes qui ont fait face a des epreuves qui peuvent, ou ne peuvent pas, etre vues a l'œil nu. Méridien / Meridian presents: Ella Wright The driving impulse of my artistic practice is to explore and give voice to the overlooked histories and practices of women by revealing their systemic subjugation and debasement. I am interested in historic concepts such as hysteria and asylum institutions which were used to police and control women. In my work, I examine the continuation of th...e patriarchal ideologies associated with hysteria and asylums into the present as perceived femininity is continuously labeled, governed, depreciated, and restricted. Textiles are my primary medium to investigate these themes due to their shared diminishment and traditional connection to femininity. I also use photography, a medium associated with the historic record, as means of questioning dominant narratives that are perceived to be objective. Through my practice I aim to uncover the frailty of consent and agency, which should not be taken for granted, while reflecting on the arbitrariness of fate and circumstance. La motivation principale de ma pratique artistique est d’explorer et a donner une voix aux histoires et aux pratiques des femmes en revelent leurs assujettissements et leur degradation systemique. Je m’interesse aux conceptions telles que l’hysterie et les instituts psychiatriques qui etaient utilises pour surveiller et controler les femmes. Dans mes œuvres, j’examine la continuation des ideologies patriarcales liees a l’hysterie et les asiles au present alors que la feminite percue est continuellement marquee, gouvernee, depreciee, et restreinte. J’utilise principalement les textiles comme medium pour examiner ces themes en raison de leurs minimisations partagees et leurs liens traditionnels a la feminite. Méridien / Meridian presents: Emily Neufeld Using the mediums of drawing, installation, and video, my works are playful in their approach. Absurdism and humour become tools to force the viewer to explore their surroundings and be rewarded for their efforts, to intercept systems of authority, and to embody alternate identities as a means to exploring desire. Things often associated with ...immaturity cartoons, vulgarity, lust for celebrities are infused with adult concerns of experiencing misogyny, sexuality, and coping with the unsolicited inheritance of a dying planet full of idiots. A l’aide des mediums de dessin, d’installation et de video, mes œuvres sont ludiques dans leur approche. L'absurdisme et l'humour deviennent des outils pour obliger le regardeur a explorer son environnement et a etre recompense pour ses efforts, a intercepter des systemes d'autorite et a incarner des identites alternatives comme moyen d'explorer le desir. Les choses souvent associees a l'immaturite - caricatures, vulgarite, convoitise de celebrites - sont empreintes du souci des adultes de l'experience de la misogynie, de la sexualite et de gerer l'heritage non sollicite d'une planete en voie de disparition pleine d'imbeciles.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Sarah Jasmine Hodgson My practice examines relationships between human beings and technology, as well as technology’s relationship to the natural world. Exploring these themes is a way for me to humanize the mechanical and to repurpose. I am a photo-based artist working in analog and digital photography, and my practice frequently branches into video and s...culptural installation. My photographic process involves a level of abstraction, where the image or original source is transformed through layers of technological manipulation or software based experimentation that degrades and alters the image. This abstract manipulation of the image often bears similarity with painting on a formal level: marks, gestural qualities, colour, and composition. The relationship between painting and photography is a subtext throughout my work. Ma pratique examine les relations entre l'humain et la technologie, ainsi que la relation de la technologie avec le monde naturel. Explorer ces themes pour moi est une facon d’humaniser la mecanique et de la reutiliser. Je suis une artiste basee sur la photo qui travaille avec la photographie analogique et numerique, et ma pratique se ramene souvent a la video ainsi qu’a l’installation sculpturale. Mon processus photographique implique un niveau d'abstraction, ou l'image ou la source d'origine est transformee a travers de couches de manipulations technologiques ou d'experimentations logicielles qui degradent et alterent l'image. Cette manipulation abstraite de l'image presente souvent des similitudes avec la peinture au niveau formel: marques, qualites gestuelles, couleur et composition. La relation entre peinture et photographie est un sous-texte tout au long de mon travail.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Geo Santhosh My specialty is painting and drawing, mostly utilizing acrylic and oil paints. The subjects of my works includes still-life, landscape, and masks. Masks are currently my subject of focus, because of my interest in the themes suggested by the mask such as persona, identity, and narrative. Some of these mask paintings present an overall personif...ication and narrative which are created by myself, while others present a significance within its cultures and traditions. The background of my works are generally dark in tone to pull greater focus towards the central subject. This amplifies the smaller details and glowing quality of the masks. Ma specialite est la peinture et le dessin, utilisant principalement des peintures acryliques et a l'huile. Les sujets de mes œuvres incluent la nature morte, le paysage et les masques. Les masques sont presentement mon sujet d'interet, en raison du significance pour les themes suggeres par le masque tels que la personnalite, l'identite et la narration. Certaines de ces tableaux de masques presentent une personnification et un recit generaux crees par moi-meme, tandis que d'autres presentent une signification au sein de ses cultures et traditions. L’arriere plan de mes œuvres sont generalement sombre pour attirer l'attention sur le sujet central. Ce type d’environnement amplifie les petits details et la qualite eclatante des masques.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Palwasha Qazi As a migrant from Afghanistan, I draw from the experience of encountering newness in every aspect of life. My paintings are metaphors and act as complex archives of my memory and experience: where I have been and how far I have come. They are about home and my relationship to land and the past. While memories slip away from the mind with age, ...I turn to what might still reside in my body. Working through expressionist brushwork allows me to transfer this embodied history into an archive of paint, reconstituting my history from within, retracing movement and filling the gaps. The process of layering, playing with transparency, building up colours and erasing them to reveal anew, mirrors the way I reflect on my memories and try to call the past from beneath the present. En tant que migrante d'origine afghane, je m'inspire de l'expérience de la nouveauté dans tous les aspects de la vie. Mes tableaux sont des métaphores et agissent comme des archives complexes de ma mémoire et de mon expérience: où j’ai été et mon cheminement. Ils parlent de la maison et ma relation à la terre et au passé. Alors que les souvenirs s'éloignent de l'esprit avec l'âge, je me tourne vers ce qui pourrait encore résider dans mon corps. Le travail de pinceau expressionniste me permet de transférer cette histoire incarnée dans une archive de peinture, reconstituant mon histoire de l'intérieur, retracer le mouvement et combler les écarts. Le processus de superposition, de jouer avec la transparence, de création de couleurs et de leurs effacements pour les révéler à nouveau, reflète ma façon de réfléchir à mes souvenirs et de tenter d’appeler le passé sous le présent.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Yvonne Shew In my work I explore art in everyday life, through images and themes collected from... the vernacular and art specific contexts in which I find myself. I use acrylic, ink, and mixed media on board to create small scale, square format works. The small size allows for an intimate and tactile experience in person, while the shape aids in posting images to Instagram, which gives a non-tactile experience of the same works. I would like viewers of my work to connect it to their own everyday experience of art, while interpreting it as a diaristic exploration of art and art making. Dans mon travail, j’explore l’art du quotidien en utilisant des images et des themes rassembles dans des contextes vernaculaires et specifiques a l’art dans lesquels je me trouve. J’utilise la peinture acrylique, l’encre et des techniques mixtes pour creer des œuvres de format carre et a petite echelle. La petite taille permet a une experience tactile et intime personnel, tandis que la forme facilite le partage d’images sur Instagram, ce qui donne une experience non tactile du travail. Je souhaite que les regardeurs de mon travail fassent des liens a leurs propres experiences quotidiennes de l’art, tout en l'interpretant comme une exploration diaristique de l'art et de sa production.

Méridien / Meridian presents: Charlotte Through deformation and abstraction of imagery, I aim to deconstruct our perception of reality. Issues of pictorial representation in two-dimensional imagery are further complicated when applied to three-dimensional space. By juxtaposing 2D designs onto 3D sculptural surfaces, my work exists in both spaces and may disorient viewers. These abstract and i...llusionary forms can be thought of as hybridised sculptures and paintings akin to 3D models in the digital realm, attempting to simultaneously occupy space in the real and imagined world. En utilisant la deformation et l’abstraction de l’image, je cherche a deconstruire notre perception de la realite. Les problemes de representation picturale dans les images bidimensionnelles sont encore compliques lorsqu'ils sont appliques a un espace tridimensionnel. En juxtaposant des conceptions 2D sur des surfaces sculpturales 3D, mon travail existe dans les deux espaces et peut desorienter les regardeurs. Ces formes abstraites et illusoires peuvent etre considerees comme des sculptures et des peintures hybrides comme des modeles 3D dans le monde numerique, tentant d'occuper l'espace dans le monde reel et imaginaire en meme temps.

Méridien / Meridian Presents: Rori Blanchfield My painting practice has paid close attention to the human body and its connection to other bodies, places, and things. I work with oil paints and prefer paper or wood panels as a painting surface. It is through my painting process that I find and unfurl the quirky features of the mundane, which becomes just as important as the finished piece. ...I try to identify and freeze peculiar movements in time and space. I look for subtle human gestures or movements that act in accordance with their surrounding environment. These gestures can create an odd moment when emphasized and speak to a deeper understanding of our behaviours with others and the emotional atmosphere created. Everyday people and their not-so-peculiar activities ground us to our personal sense of home. I acknowledge the absurd, because we are all subject to it. I urge the viewer to stop and look again. Ma pratique de la peinture a porte une attention particuliere au corps humain et a ses liens avec d'autres corps, lieux et choses. Je travaille avec des peintures a l'huile et prefere le papier ou les panneaux de bois comme surface. C’est tout au long de mon processus que je decouvre et deploie les traits bizarres du mondain, qui deviennent tout aussi importants que l’oeuvre finale. J'essaie d'identifier et de capturer des mouvements particuliers dans le temps et dans l'espace. Je cherche des gestes subtils ou des mouvements qui agissent en fonction de leur environnement. Ces gestes peuvent creer un moment etrange quand l'accent est mis sur une comprehension plus profonde de nos comportements avec les autres et de l'atmosphere emotionnelle creee. Les gens ordinaires et leurs activites normales nous amenent a notre sens personnel du chez nous. Je reconnais l'absurde, car nous y sommes tous soumis. J'exhorte le regardeur a s'arreter et a regarder encore.
