New Music Friday: Rattle Round https://www.awakeneers.com/app?song=rattle-round As Erica mentioned a few weeks back, songs come in all shapes and sizes. This we...ek's release was one of those ones where the chorus comes together quickly, only to be followed by nothing. Ideas for the rest of the song evaporate, and the piece is relegated to the "unfinished songs" folder. A while later, we had a "new originals night" scheduled (where everyone brings whatever new material they’ve been working on and shares it with the rest of the band). Immanuel didn't have any songs on the front burner, so he pulled up the old "unfinished songs" folder filled with random scraps of lyrics, chords, and audio memos and came across the first two lines of Rattle Round. The rest followed shortly, and was solidified in a boisterous arrangement session in which he enlisted the assistance of several brothers’ voices and instruments (and they somehow managed to convince him to end the songs hanging on the C chord). The first time this song was ever performed in public, at a fundraising concert here on Cortes Island, Immanuel clean forgot the lyrics to the second verse and had to ad lib. Luckily, the video of this event remains safely locked away on his computer, and is not for sale at any price.

New Music Friday: Frédéric Chopin’s Waltz No. 19 in A minor This week we have a cover song from the 1840s! We don't perform many covers, but it's nice to mix ...in something old and familiar every now and then. When folk musicians play classical pieces, the results aren't always immediately recognizable to a classically trained ear, but we hope this one will be familiar, at least to the musicologists on our newsletter. Musicians get old, but good music doesn't. See more
