Merville Community Association 10.12.2020

We are temporarily closed but not inactive. The Merville Community Association is still chugging along though rentals have completely dropped off a cliff. This means that there is very little income in-coming. The playground is officially closed. The Gumboot Market is in a transition period as we are looking for a new manager(s). Seed and food only markets seem to be permitted so if anyone wants to take this on, step right up. The Community Garden is also available for ...anyone who would like to plant crops. Last year’s plantings around the buildings are looking stunning and today Don turned on the irrigation system so there doesn’t have to be any more hand watering by the Wonder Women (and men). More grass seed has been planted so there could be a thick, verdant lawn happening this summer. Due to the present disuse of the hall, we have taken on a number of projects as we won’t be bothering anyone with construction activities. Inside, a backstage door has been cut in and will be finished with a small set of access stairs. Three light bars have been attached to the ceiling so that stage lighting will be more professional. 30 new chairs have been bought so now we can dump a bunch of the older woodies. There is also a new rental/partnership agreement with TheatreWorks in the making and we hope to establish the Merville hall as a bonafide theatre venue. Outside the hall, the Manse permit is in and we are waiting for an engineer sign off the structure. Once that is done, we will proceed with renovating the interior so that the building can join the (presently non-existent) rental pool. The kitchen ramp has been started and the permit received. This ramp will be 60 wide so it will be the primary accessible ramp with the first ramp being the secondary ramp. Rules is rules. The big logs lying by the church have been cut into timbers, thanks to Bill Fraser, and will be used for the kitchen entrance (Martin Stutz). There will be lighting upgrades at the rink, sponsored by the MHL (Merville Hockey League) players, and they are also interested in making new basketball backboards. These guys are great!! A new display sign has been installed and the letters are so much easier to put in. The solar panels have been doing a good job of keeping the church warm in the winter and now they will start to bank Kwhrs with BC Hydro. The documentary film on Merville 100 Years is progressing with a few more interviews to do and then there will be the task of editing hours into minutes. The present board has obeyed the edict of not having large meetings due to Covid19 so we have taken to email board meetings which, surprisingly, get the job done.
