"Our revels now are ended. These our actors, as I foretold you, Were all spirits and are melted into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind..." 'The Tempest Act IV Sc. 1 My thanks to Springworks and all who sail upon her for doing yeoman's work creating a festiv...al that is innovative, unique and special comprised of works that are sometimes unknown and unsung yet important and necessary. Most importantly, I want to thank a cast of talented actors and a stage manager who presented 'Pierrot & the Moon', a show that is, to use a French word, "formidable". This includes Graeme Black-Robinson, puppeteer, Catherine Daoust-Pichette, actor, Michelle Gram Giesen, shadow puppeteer, Stephen Lafrenie, actor, Scott McCulloch, actor, Michael Panich, stage manager and Enzo Voci, actor. Au clair de la lune, Mon ami Pierrot Prête-moi ta plume, Pour écrire un mot. Ma chandelle est morte... Je n’ai plus de feu Ouvre-moi ta porte Pour l’amour de Dieu. A song from my childhood, learned long ago in elementary school, was taught to me by nuns in French Catholic School. Fifty years later, it formed le point de départ for the development of 'Pierrot & the Moon', opening one month from today on Saturday, October 14th at SpringWorks: indie theatre & arts festival in Stratford. Back then I remember thinking, who was this fellow Pierrot sitting by the light of the moon? Would he be my friend too? Years later, as a student at the Canadian Mime School, I learned that Pierrot was a clown in 19th century France, a street urchin dressed in flowing white who was in love with the Moon. Created by actor/acrobat, Gaspard Debureau, he became immensely popular, so much so that people copied his look, appearing at masquerade balls dressed like him. In 1944, Debureau's life became the basis for the film 'Les Enfants du Paradis'.
