Rainbow Mix Flower gardens can be wild or contained. Vibrant or pale. Colorful or monotone. But if you're looking for color, why not consider a mix - like our ...Rainbow Mix. Snapdragon Rainbow Mix seeds are a beautiful, traditional garden favourite that have been selected for their colour richness: from the palest to the deepest pinks, coral, blood-red, and yellow. Expect some bi-coloured flowers as well. The 60cm (24") tall stems make superb, long-lasting cut flowers, and bring an intense burst of colour into flower arrangements. The stems of this old-fashioned mix are sturdy, with very upright growth and uniform flowering. Grow snapdragons in moderately fertile soil and keep them watered, especially in long periods of hot weather. Choose large, deep containers for Snapdragon Rainbow Mix, with good drainage. Iceland Poppy The Iceland Poppy is a hardy, but short-lived perennial, grown as a biennial in Coastal gardens. Either way, they self-sow readily, so will last ...for years at a time. The large, cup-shaped blooms have a texture like crepe paper and appear in a range of subdued pastel colours - apricot, gold, tangerine, and white. Sow Iceland Poppy seeds in early spring or late fall where they are to grow permanently. The flower stalks grow to around 30c (12") tall and are among the longest-lasting poppies as cut flowers. They are highly attractive to honeybees and bumblebees, with seeds that are easy to collect and disperse. Unlike the California Poppy, this variety usually remains where it was planted. All parts of the plant are mildly toxic but acrid enough that animals will not eat them. Quick Facts: Perennial Delicate and bright Hardy, but short-lived Deer resistant Hear more, or order these beauties: https://www.westcoastseeds.com//p/products/iceland-poppies

Starting Tomatoes Indoors - Part II Yesterday we spoke about choosing a variety that works for you...today, we'll move on to getting those seedlings started ...indoors! 1 Set up a place where the seedlings can grow. To speed up germination and to ensure that the seeds germinate at once, it's a good idea to use a seedling heat mat. The "bottom heat" provided by such a mat can hasten germination by 1-2 weeks. 2 Sowing Seeds The best time to sow tomato seeds is mid-March to early April. By the time the weather begins to warm in June & July, plants should be large & tough enough to withstand the weather outdoors. Sow tomato seeds in pots in a high-quality seed starting mix. Dampen the soil so that it’s moist but not squishy to the touch, and sow two or three seeds cm to 1cm deep. Keep tomato seedlings brightly lit by a grow light or in a very bright window. This keeps young plants tougher & more compact. 3 Transplanting This is all about temperature. Early tomatoes can be planted outside when nighttime temperatures rise above 7C (45F), while all other tomatoes prefer minimum nighttime temperatures of 10C (50F) or higher. Err on the side of caution, as tomatoes are tropical plants that really dislike the cold. We'll talk more about this transition and transplanting to the outdoors when the time comes. If you want to get the deets ahead, here is an informative link: https://www.westcoastseeds.com///starting-tomatoes-indoors

Starting Tomatoes Indoors There are months to go before we'll enjoy a fresh tomato from our garden, but planning has to start soon to make it happen. By start...ing tomatoes indoors, they'll have a head start on growth, which brings maturity forward, producing fruits earlier in the season. While tomato plants may be available at the garden store in the spring, growing them from seed provides choice for unique characteristics, flavours, colours, and heritage. When selecting your variety, consider your ultimate goal to narrow down choices. Looking for snacking? Cherry tomatoes may be your choice. Growing for canning? Think Roma varieties like La Roma or Pozzano. Another consideration - growing conditions. Tomatoes want a warm, bright place to grow, and it’s best to situate them near to the house for easy watering. Bonny Best and Early Cascade are sturdy varieties that will stand up to cooler weather. To prevent certain issues that can occur on tomato plants later in summer, go for early season producers like Siletz or Oregon Spring. Once the variety has been selected, it’s time to set up a place where the seedlings can grow. And, we'll get to that tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Why are there not more greens on the farmstand??? The answer is our plants are just not growing fast enough after getting harvested. To get our salad mix we ha...ve to cut the leaves off the various greens and then they have to grow back for the next harvest. In the summer this can happen quite fast, but in the winter with so little light and cold temperatures this takes a very long time. Some pictures to illustrate before and after harvest. For our kale, you can see we have harvested as much as we can, the top of the plant needs some leaves to photosynthesize and grow more leaves. In warmer/sunnier weather we can plant more salad greens, but nothing can germinate at this time of year with such cold soil and low light. We just prepped our other greenhouse for replanting so we are keeping our fingers crossed for some sunny days ahead! A big part of winter is just adapting your meals to what is available. If there is no salad mix, try a collard salad! See more
