Here's a great empathy practice. Try asking, "Do you need help with this? Or do you just ned to vent?" before you offer advice. #coachingconversations

How are you holding the emergent silence? One of my favorite podcasts, 99% invisible, recently dove into the opportunities the COVID pandemic is providing some scientific researchers. This summer, marine ecologist Michelle Fournet will be able to listen to the waters of Glacier Bay, Alaska, absent of human activity. For the first time, the whalesong she studies will not be dimmed by the noise of cruise ships.... The questions she will be able to ask of her suddenly stilled ocean lab include: "When (the whales) are not struggling to be heard, does the complexity of what they say increase? Are they willing to have more nuanced interactions that they can't have when it's noisy?" Unintended stillness can be held as an opportunity, if we can allow new questions to emerge from it. I had the opportunity to work with two different groups of leaders this week: one, emerging into the technology space, the other, established medical specialists coming together to form supportive connections between different generations of leaders. The daily realities of these two groups were worlds apart, but their sincerity for growth--and the vulnerabilities it awakens--could not have been more aligned. I was reminded of this talk by poet David Whyte and his beautiful a...cknowledgement that, "If you're sincere about your work, it should break your heart. You should get to thresholds where you do not know how to proceed...What does that do? It puts you into a proper relationship with reality. Why?
