SPOTLIGHT Shelley Adler: Taking a Bath (Lee Miller). . . Adler's upcoming solo exhibition, Idols, Muses and Lovers, opening June 10th at the gallery and online, will focus on five of Picasso’s female muses who were artists in their own right. These artists showed extraordinary strength and perseverance in their careers before, during and after their time spent as Picasso’s models.... . . "Lee Miller was an American photographer, photo journalist and fashion model. Miller moved to Britain shortly before World War II, convincing British Vogue to send her to war torn Europe in 1944 to document the atrocities of Hitler’s Europe and of liberation in the Jewish death camps of Dachau and Buchenwald. She was a formidable character, unafraid of the unconventional role she assumed as the only women war correspondent on the front line at that time." - SHELLEY ADLER . . In the second image, Miller captures Irmgard Seefried, a famous German soprano, while she sings an aria from the famous Madame Butterfly in the ruins of an opera house. Miller photographs Seefried with grace and technical acuity. The strength of both women can be felt in this image, which is also representative of other females who lived and worked through World War II. . . Bathtubs have made frequent appearances in artwork throughout history. Typically, these works are produced through the lens of a male gaze, such as Alex Colville's Woman in Bathtub, which features himself and his wife, Rhoda. Adler has always been interested in reversing the male gaze. Her depiction reimagines the original black and white photograph of Lee Miller in the bath with colour. She conveys Miller's commanding presence while her loose brushstrokes describe and further abstract the arresting composition she saw in the photograph. . . Pictured here: 1. Shelley Adler, Taking a Bath (Lee Miller), 2020, oil on canvas, 50 x 40 in. 2. Lee Miller, Irmgard Seefried, Opera singer singing an aria from ‘Madame Butterfly,’ 1945. 3. Paolo Ventura: Grazia Ricevuta A closer look at the tradition of Ex Voto. . . "European and Canadian votive [ex voto] offerings were produced primarily as expressions of faith and gratitude by artists who were more vitally concerned with their emotions than they were with the rules of painting.... Most of the ex voto paintings of Quebec deal with incidents of shipwreck and miracles on water. This is understandable because of the constant threat of floods or ice jams on the river. The utter simplicity and purity of heart which inspired the painter[s]...so vividly cannot be found anywhere else today except in the paintings of Chagall. It is an excellent example of what the earliest Canadian paintings must have looked like." - CANADIAN ART, Vol. 18, No. 4, July/August 1961 . . Ventura's take on the Ex Voto tradition, as seen in his current exhibition, Grazia Ricevuta, is more playful and broader in scope than surviving an accident. The imagined scenarios are fantastical and closely tied to the unique history of each Italian town they are set in. His visual metaphors include overcoming life's emotional struggles, such as finding a way out of a difficult situation or finding inspiration after having lost it. . . Pictured here: 1. We are pleased to announce our representation of OWEN GORDON. . . A careful observer of life with a passion for #storytelling, Owen Gordon illuminates various narratives - of real or imagined characters - with vibrant #colours and #patterns. In addition to being a prolific painter, Gordon is also a sculptor and writer. Over the last four decades, he has experimented with different styles including #portraits, #landscapes, still lifes and #abstractions. While his influences st...retch as wide as Pablo Picasso to Tom Thomson, at the core of Gordon’s work is his rich life story. . . Born in #Jamaica, the landscape and music was formative in his approach as a young #artist and still is to this day. At the age of 38, Gordon emigrated to #Canada where he worked for the City of Toronto until his recent retirement. He never stopped painting throughout his career, but rather used his daily experiences and the people he read about or encountered, to fuel his practice. . . Gordon's first solo exhibition at Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Towards the Horizon, will open on November 26 and run until December 19, 2020. Presented in partnership with Black Artists’ Network In Dialogue (BAND), part of the proceeds from sales will be directed to BAND emerging Artists exhibitions program, which allows BAND Gallery to provide support to Black Artists who have not had the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional gallery setting. . . HIGHLIGHT FROM PHOTO LONDON DIGITAL 2020. . . Ljubodrag Andric's photograph, #Jaipur 22, from his latest body of work #India, is included in this week's "Curated Picks" from the 2020 @photolondonfair chosen by @hodgsonf. ... Andric's architectural abstractions have been exhibited internationally including in major exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Le Locle, Switzerland (2017), the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice (2016), and the Triennale di Milano (2016). In early 2019, Andric spent almost a month in #Rajasthan, India travelling between cities and desert to photograph. The unique quality of light he encountered there resulted in a series of painterly #photographs punctuated with heightened #texture and striking colour. Jaipur 22 was photographed as part of this series and depicts an ancient #stepwell near the capital of Rajasthan. Andric's mastery of colour and light transforms the structure into a geometric abstraction. Our special online presentation of photographs by Ljubodrag Andric and Edward Burtynsky, Aerial / Abstract, is on view through to October 18th. The last available edition of Jaipur 22 is featured in the presentation. . . To view our online booth, click the link in our bio. . . PHOTO LONDON DIGITAL 2020. . . "To understand Andric's work is to leave your search for subject and #narrative in the traditional sense behind. These images are from a place, India, but they are not simply about India. In keeping with the established arc of his production, these images are more about the artist's finely tuned eye. He sees layered references to the #history of #art in places we would pass by without a second thought if we were touring India. It's a taut formal... vision that can only be understood by standing in front of the prints themselves - one needs to stand in their presence - it is only then that we come to understand the full power of his image-making. Andric offers us a palpable, mystical sense of place and presence. Through his masterful digital #technique and keen sensitivity to #light and colour we are drawn in, entranced by highly detailed #textures and sophisticated compositional tensions. These images ultimately transcend their subject matter, allowing us access to a highly attenuated Zen-like, #meditative state." -EDWARD BURTYNSKY . . FOCUS ON: ERIK MADIGAN HECK | The Garden is on view through October 24. . . @erikmadiganheck’s introduction to photography came when his mother gifted him his first camera at age 14. Through her encouragement, he began to engage with the world through photography and quickly became enamoured with the medium. Heck continues to use the same 35 mm lens his mother gave him in high school and shoots only using #natural #light.... Heck quickly became interested in the world of fashion, in particular, the #avant-garde garments by top designers in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Growing up in Excelsior, #Minnesota, he admired the diversity of expression and identities that this world exposed him to, as well as the theatrical quality and artistry of the clothing. After receiving his MFA in Photography at @parsonsschoolofdesign, Heck became the youngest photographer to be awarded the prestigious ICP Infinity Award in 2013. Central to Heck's practice is his approach to colour. He begins his process with what is in front of him and then elaborates using colour to push the images in a certain direction. This process blurs the lines between photography and painting as well as representation and abstraction. His latest body of work, The Garden, developed organically when his wife, Brianna, encouraged him to create work using their family home in Roxbury, Connecticut. Five years later, the series has developed into Heck's most personal and fantastical body of work to date. Brianna and their two young sons feature in many of the photographs, which are captured in the forest surrounding their rural property. Most recently, Heck has incorporated fashion garments into his images, bringing the two worlds together. While in isolation at his family home, Heck has continued to photograph for Harper's Bazaar UK and @vancleefarpels with his wife as his model and muse. . . PHOTO LONDON DIGITAL 2020 - Now open! . . Join us for Aerial / Abstract, a special presentation of large-format photographs by Ljubodrag Andric and Edward Burtynsky. .... . Long-time colleagues and friends, their painterly and highly detailed images have continued to push the boundaries of photographic representation. Examples of Burtynsky’s aerial photographs, as well as other recent projects will be paired with recent works from Andric's India series. While their respective approaches to subject and aesthetic diverge, a mutual admiration for art history, particularly painting, sets up a compelling dialogue between their respective practices. . . Sebastião Salgado: Blessure At the Espace Frans Krajcberg, Centre D’art Contemporain, Art & Nature on view through February 27, 2021. . . "To show the essential role of the Amazon rainforest in the planetary balance, Sebastião Salgado flew over this immense territory, revealing between sky and earth a landscape populated with life. But during his numerous travels over the Amazon, he has also witnessed gigantic fires caused by man, gaping open wounds in the forest, which keep ...getting bigger. It is this open wound that Sebastião Salgado has chosen to show for the first time at the Espace Frans Krajcberg, in an intimate exhibition. These unpublished photos are there to alert us and remind us that a wound that we look into can heal. The vastness of the Amazon, its strength, its vitality, will allow it to survive if we become aware of the dangers that threaten this astonishing ecosystem, essential to our balance. "Blessure" is conceived as "the antithesis" of Sebastião Salgado's work on the Amazon and its peoples - the subject of a major exhibition at the Philharmonie de Paris in April 2021." . . Two unpublished projects are also on display: "Grazia Received", an affectionately ironic reinterpretation of the ex voto theme, and "La Gamba Ritrovata", the result of a residency carried out at the Central Institute for Catalog and Documentation in Rome, launched thanks to a collaboration between CAMERA and the ministerial body. Curated by Walter Guadagnini, with the collaboration of Monica Poggi, the exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of the first monograph dedicated to the work of Paolo Ventura. The volume, published by Silvana Editoriale, traces fifteen years of the artist's activity through the presentation of twenty-one series created from 2015 to today, offering a singular and absolutely original interpretation of staged photography. In addition to the essay by Guadagnini himself, it contains a text by the writer and literary critic Francine Prose and a long interview with Monica Poggi." . . #MetivierGallery #PaoloVentura #Photography #MixedMedia #Painting #Retrospective #Art @paolo.ventura
