Staff pet Rory is all dressed up and ready for Hallowe'en! Or is it Howl- owe'en?

16 week old Elle came to us after a period of vomiting and diarrhea. She was not terribly ill, but one of the issues a tiny dog can have with vomiting and not eating is hypoglycaemia ( low blood sugar.) At 1 kg body weight, she needed to have a short hospital stay until a safe blood sugar level could be maintained. Medications to stop the vomiting and diarrhea, corn syrup to immediately raise her blood sugar levels out of dangerous levels and then food when she was able to keep it down. She was able to go home as soon as she could eat on her own. But she spent her entire stay with us snoozing in someone's arms . . #metroanimalemergencyclinic #tinydogs #isntshecute #chihuahualove

Hi folks! Staff pet Terry is here with a little reminder about ticks. The weather is getting colder but ticks are still alive and well. Ticks typically go through a "bloom" twice a year...spring and fall. So it means that even though you might be wearing a jacket and gloves on your walk, ticks are still very active, there are lots of them and they are all out looking for a nice warm meal. Both you and your dog fit the bill. Ticks are not classified as an emergency and we do... not sell flea and tick products. Your family veterinary team know your pet's health history and can assist you in making the best choice for your needs. Ticks can cause many different health concerns - always check yourself and your pet after an autumn walk. Prevention and diligence is the best defense. So remember! Colder weather doesn't mean ticks are gone. It means they blend in with the leaves

Burn out. High levels of stress. Leaving the profession. Suicidal thoughts ( or suicide itself.) Depression. Online bullying. Threats. Long hours with constant demands ( physical, mental and emotional.) These are the realities of veterinary medicine, especially now. Add to this the fact that privacy laws prevent veterinarians from publicly defending themselves against any accusations or online bullying (no matter how one sided or inaccurate)and it is easy to see why veterinarians, technicians and assistants choose to leave. People go into veterinary medicine for a love of animals and a desire to help. Please be kind to your veterinary team. They deserve your respect.

Lots of factors contribute to the recovery of a pet while in hospital - careful diagnosis and treatment, excellent medical and nursing care, attention to comfort and details. And affection! Not all pets want attention and affection while they stay with us but for those that do, it is an important part of the healing process. Rory stayed with us for several days when he was quite ill and affection was definitely part of his process. Here he is catching a bit of love from Dr ...Lamey Giving an animal comfort and reassurance when they may be anxious or nervous in hospital is something we feel very strongly about - a relaxed and happy animal heals better. And let's face ...it can be one of the most rewarding parts of the job ! (Rory has since recovered and is home with his family. ) . . #metroanimalemergencyclinic #animalnursingcare #dogsofhrm See more

It's National Reptile Day! Did you know that reptiles can require the same level of attention as cats and dogs? Reptiles have very specific needs for care and it is extremely important to educate yourself on their requirements before considering adding one to your family. And remember - reptiles get sick, too, so part of this research should always be to recognize the signs and to know which veterinarians in your area are qualified to see and treat them. Meet Blueberry! B...lueberry is a Blue Tongue Skink who belongs to one of our technicians. He requires ongoing special care due to early onset cataracts. Isn't he beautiful? . . #metroanimalemergencyclinic #nationalreptileday #reptilesofinstagram #reptiles #bluetongueskinks #reptilesareawesome See more

Sometimes when we need a urine sample, we have to go right to the source! A cystocentesis is when a needle is inserted directly into the bladder through the abdomen. Often animals need sedation for this procedure but staff pet Murphy allowed us to collect one without ( it is not a painful process.) Lots of cuddles and kisses followed Good boy, Murphy! . . #metroanimalemergencyclinic #emergencyveterinarymedicine #dogsofthehrm #vetmed #goldenretriever

Our friends at Hope for Wildlife are used to unpredictable wildlife calls, but even by their standards this one takes the cake!

We've said it over and over...at the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic, we love our vet techs. Really love them. And we know that without them, our hospital would not be able to function. National Veterinary Technicians Week is a time for us to REALLY appreciate them, especially after the events of the last 8 months. The responsibilities of a veterinary technician are endless and varied, but here are a few : Anesthetist. Hygienist. Nurse. Phlebotomist. Laboratory technician. S...urgical Assistant. Radiology technician. Educator. Advocate. ADVOCATE. ADVOCATE. In our hospital, technicians draw blood, apply bandages, handle nursing care, post surgical care, are lab techs, monitor anesthesia, take xrays, and assist veterinarians in any way they can. But they do SO MUCH more than that. They are the voice for your pet when you're not there ; they ensure that any changes in behaviour and physical recovery is brought to the immediate attention of the treating veterinarian, which directly impacts the course of treatment. They are your pet's biggest and most important advocate. It is an exhausting job heavy with responsibility, especially in emergency medicine. So exhausting that we also have technician assistants to help them. Our technician assistants do an amazing job and together they are a formidable team It is done for love of animals and a desire to make a difference. So...have you thanked a veterinary technician today?
