Ransom Ware Incident in Calgary For the past week the U of C had all of their faculties computer systems held for ransom as it was completely encrypted by a virus. During this time all faculty work was at a standstill as computers and servers were completely inaccessible. They were facing the potential of losing lifelong research and other data. In the end, they decided to pay a large ransom in order to retrieve the encryption key to unlock all of their work and data. They ...admit that the attack came from the outside and although it has not been publicized the Trojan was likely let in by a compromised email attachment or a website. This was headline news in Calgary and the U of C faced a productivity, publicity and financial nightmare because of this. Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre issued a joint alert with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security earlier this year warning about the proliferation of ransomware. It estimates that there were more than 1,600 ransomware attacks per day in 2015 against Canadians. Let’s treat this as a reminder and continue to be very careful with email attachments and websites. The simple act of opening an email attachment on a company PC that isn’t in our virus definition database or visiting an nefarious website or plugging in an infected thumb drive can potentially allow a virus into our network. Even if you are not connected to the network at the time.

Knowledge is Power #1 What is a Virus? A virus is a man-made program or piece of code that causes an unexpected, usually negative, event. Viruses are often disguised games or images with clever marketing titles such as "Me, nude."... What is Spyware? Spyware is a wide range of unwanted programs that exploit infected computers for commercial gain. They can deliver unsolicited pop-up advertisements, steal personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers), monitor web-browsing activity for marketing purposes, or route HTTP requests to advertising sites. What is Phishing? Phishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques through email or instant messaging. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire other people’s personal information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication. What is a Trojan Horse? Trojan horse program is a malicious program that pretends to be a benign application; a Trojan horse program purposefully does something the user does not expect. Trojans are not viruses since they do not replicate, but Trojan horse programs can be just as destructive.

Ransomware is a type of malware that can be covertly installed on a computer without knowledge or intention of the user that restricts access to the infected computer system in some way, and demands that the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction. Some forms of ransomware systematically encrypt files on the system's hard drive, which become difficult or impossible to decrypt without paying the ransom for the encryption key, while some may simply lock the system and display messages intended to coax the user into paying. Ransomware typically propagates as a Trojan, whose payload is disguised as a seemingly legitimate file; thus, ransomware is an access-denial type of attack that prevents legitimate users from accessing files.[1]
