Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day! MLK was one of the greatest organizers of all time. At MVA we are striving to learn how to organize like the very best of them. I would be so curious to hear your opinions of what MLK's greatest strengths were. And how do you think we can learn from him in our work here in Vancouver? Let me know in the comments below. - Liam Maclure
Happy new year! Last year, MVA grew enormously. Eight new organizations joined MVA. Our coordination team grew to eight bright and talented leaders, and our reconciliation project is moving forward with ambition and promise. We are so excited for the year ahead and look forward to working with you all in meaningful ways very soon. If you would like to get involved, please sign up via our website https://www.metvanalliance.org/get_involved_3
In the midst of a global uprising against police violence and systemic racism, No Visible Trauma is a searing investigation of the deeply troubled Calgary Police Service, which shot and killed more people than the New York or Chicago police departments in 2018. From the kidnapping and beating of a young African immigrant, to the fatal shooting of an unarmed man during a wellness check, the film exposes police brutality and a justice system that refuses to hold officers acco...untable. We hope that watching this film will inspire you to become involved in looking for solutions. There are several organizations in Vancouver that are actively working on police accountability issues and others working on new approaches for mental health emergencies. Every day we are reminded that we are in a climate emergency. Unprecedented heat waves, droughts, fires, extreme weather events, floods, refugees the list goes on. Where can we find the individual and collective strength to clearly face the truth of the emergency, mourn the damage being done to our blue planet, and inspire ourselves and others to action? Learn more through listening to Dr. Carmen Lansdowne speak about these issues and more. ... https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mobilizing-faith-and-spirit-for

Our thoughts are with the family, friends and community of Vivian Seegers, who has, sadly, passed away. Vivian was a mother, sister, aunt, teacher, mentor and Elder as well as an Anglican priest with the Urban Aboriginal Ministry and a leader of our Alliance. Her quiet, dignified presence will be missed dearly and by many. May her memory be a blessing. Photos: Deanna Burgart.

The hotel industry is refusing to bring back women who clean rooms, cook meals, and serve guests as the industry recovers. TAKE ACTION today and say no to unequal women in the 21st century! #bcpoli #bclab #vanpoli #vanlab #BCunequalwomen https://www.bcunequalwomen.org/
Great news in this year's BC budget for children and families! Public transit will be free for children 12 years old and younger - a key demand from our 2018 'Fares Fair' delegates' assembly!
Come stand with hospitality workers against the big hotel lobby. Racialized women have been unjustly fired and we must fight to protect their jobs! https://www.facebook.com/events/273041894420113/
This morning the Hilton Metrotown in Burnaby served a 72-hour lockout notice to the union. This means that Hilton hotel workers could be locked out as early as Friday! TAKE ACTION; Send a letter to Hilton general management telling them NO lockouts and to recall their workers as business recovers! https://actionnetwork.org/letters/no-lockout/

At this unique time in history, solidarity and community are more important than ever. Yet we cannot gather in person. We hope you will join us online in commemorating Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, at an online event with the Honourable John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia. We will honour the memories of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust in the presence of brave survivors.... Join us on Thursday April 8th at 3:30PM PST | 6:30 PM EST. Registration is not required https://www.facebook.com/events/904210193743630
