Marathon Family Health Team 18.01.2022

After the holidays, many of us are looking to improve our eating habits, and support can often be helpful. The Healthy You program, offered by the Marathon Family Health Team, is a free online weekly lifestyle group that can help with this. Making lifestyle changes encouraged in this course can lead to improved blood sugars, blood pressure and cholesterol. We also promote a positive body image by learning about ways to feel good about yourself. To register, contact the Registered Dietitian at the Marathon Family Health Team by calling 229-1541x232 or emailing [email protected]. Or, schedule an appointment with the dietitian to talk about whether it’s right for you. Making lifestyle changes doesn’t have to be overwhelming; take it one step at a time, and use us for support!

If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have tested positive for the virus (on a PCT or rapid test), please inform your close contacts. This includes anyone you were less than 2 metres away from for at least 15 minutes, or multiple shorter lengths of time without PPE, in the 48 hours before your symptoms began or your positive test result was received, whichever came first. Informing your contacts will help slow the spread of the virus in our communities.... Consider giving them the link to ontario.ca/exposed and letting them know to follow the advice for "being exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19".

The Marathon Family Health Team and the North of Superior Healthcare Group are reporting 10 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the Marathon catchment area. Four of the positive cases were confirmed through PCR testing and six were self-reported positive rapid tests. As rapid tests are voluntarily reported and PCR tests are limited to high-risk individuals, we estimate that the number of cases reported significantly underestimate the true number of people with COVID-19 in our ...communities. For this reason, reported case numbers should be interpreted with caution and should only be used as a signal that COVID-19 is circulating in our communities. Thank you to the individuals who self-reported their positive rapid test by emailing [email protected]. The Marathon Family Health Team and the North of Superior Healthcare Group are reporting one (1) new positive case of COVID-19 in Marathon. There is currently one active case in Marathon. The individual who recently tested positive was exposed to the virus through close contact. While the province works on safely reopening, everyone is encouraged to avoid indoor get-togethers with individuals who are not from their households. Recently, the Ministry of Health also announced that outdoor gatherings of five (5) people or less are permitted. Maintaining physical distance, even when socializing outdoors, can help keep these encounters as low risk as possible. For more information, please visit: https://mfht.org/2020/12/15/local-covid-19-case-information/

The Marathon Family Health Team and the North of Superior Healthcare Group are reporting that both positive cases of COVID-19 in Marathon have been deemed resolved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. There are currently zero (0) active cases in our community. Both newly resolved cases were confirmed as being U.K. variants of concern. So far, evidence suggests that variants of concern spread more easily than the original strain, meaning they are more contagious. They may ...also cause more severe illness. While the variants of concern spread more easily, they spread in the same way as original COVID-19. This means the same types of preventive strategies will be effective. However, these variants can more easily take advantage of any relaxation of those preventive measures. This reinforces the importance of staying vigilant as more individuals in our communities and across the province become fully vaccinated. There is also some concern that COVID-19 vaccines are not as effective at protecting us from variant strains of COVID-19. But as more research is being done, experts are reporting that vaccines still appear to provide excellent protection against COVID-19 for those who are fully vaccinated. For example, the Pfizer vaccine seems to be 89% effective at protecting individuals from any infection from the U.K. variant and 94% to 97% effective at protecting against severe disease, hospitalization and death from any variant of concern. Continuing to follow public health measures and seeking COVID-19 vaccination are great ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19 and variants of concern.

On May 20th, 2021, another 498 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine were safely administered in Marathon. Currently, 63% of eligible individuals in our catchment population have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 20% have received both doses. The Marathon Family Health Team is very pleased to have been able to efficiently put 996 vaccines into arms over the last two weeks. We look forward to continuing to offer up to 500 eligible individuals with first an...d second doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at our upcoming clinic on June 3rd, 2021. Since early March, first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to: Adults 30+ years of age Essential workers 18+ years of age Some essential workers 12+ years of age Individuals with priority health conditions 12+ years of age Second doses have been and administered to some of the following: Seniors living in congregate settings Some individuals with highest risk health conditions, including those with organ transplants and who are on active cancer treatment High-risk healthcare workers, including all hospital and clinic staff and providers, as well as first responders Essential care partners of seniors living in congregate settings Indigenous adults and their household members At this time, all individuals 18 years and older are eligible to receive a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Please help the MFHT better manage appointment requests by utilizing our online booking options. We are concerned that our patients are having difficulty contacting us by phone due to some technical difficulties and the increasing demand on our phone lines. Requesting appointments online will help us connect with you more efficiently since we can deploy multiple staff to manage the email appointment requests. Please remember that your healthcare providers want to see you if you are feeling unwell or have any medical concerns that are not related to COVID-19. Although some of our services may be delivered differently during the COVID-19 era, we remain committed to providing our patients with quality and comprehensive care.

Mental health is an important men’s health issue because 1 in 10 Canadian men will experience major depression throughout their lives. In fact, 3 of 4 deaths by suicide are men. Therefore, it’s important to encourage men to be proactive about their mental health, to be aware of risk factors and symptoms, and to stay connected with their friends and family. Many men have reported that they would feel uncomfortable to ask for help. If you want to talk or if you want to reach ou...t to a friend or family member who is struggling, you’re encouraged to start that conversation today. It’s not always easy, but it’s important. If you have been feeling down or overwhelmed about life, here are some ideas to get you started: 1. Talk to someone you trust, especially when things are tough. 2. Get moving. Exercise does great things to your body and mind. 3. Take a break You don’t need to solve every challenge today, so give yourself some downtime. 4. Get out and do something you enjoy with a friend. 5. If you’ve tried some of the things above and still feel down, then talk to a professional for advice and support.

Young men between the ages of 15 to 29 years are at higher risk of developing testicular cancer. The following may increase a man’s risk of developing testicular cancer: family history previous occurrence of testicular cancer... undescended testes at birth, and calcium deposits in the testicles. Regular testicular self-examination (once per month) is one of the best ways to detect early signs of testicular cancer. In fact, the best place to perform a self-check is in the shower. If you notice a change in size or shape, a lump that wasn’t there previously, or if they become painful to touch, please speak with your health care provider.

Marathon Family Health Team 24.10.2020

Men's risk of developing prostate cancer will depend on factors like their age, family history and ethnicity (i.e. African American men are more at risk). Not every man will experience symptoms of prostate cancer; however, some signs and symptoms of prostate cancer include: frequent urination, painful or burning urination,... difficulty starting urination or holding back urine, blood in urine, and/or frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs. Often times, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up. Therefore, recognizing symptoms and regular check-ups are the best ways to detect prostate cancer early. Men over 50 years of age have the option of getting tested for early detection of prostate cancer by having a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test. This simple blood test may be used to help detect prostate cancer early. If detected early, prostate cancer survival rates are better than 98%. Therefore, if you are 50 years of age or older, consider talking to your family physician about whether you should have a PSA test. If you are of African or Caribbean descent or if you have a father or brother with prostate cancer in their history, start that conversation at the age of 45 years old.

Movember (formerly known as November) aims to raise awareness for men’s health issues. Why? Because men experience worse longer-term health than women and, on average, die six years earlier from largely preventable reasons. Movember is a time to share education about some of the biggest health issues faced by men. Education and awareness about these issues can lead men to living healthier, happier and longer lives. It can also reduce the number of preventable deaths.

Well-designed and well-fitting masks or face coverings can prevent the spread of your infectious respiratory droplets. They may also help protect you from the infectious respiratory droplets of others. How well a mask or face covering works depends on the materials used, how the mask is made, and most importantly, how well it fits. For this reason, recommendations for homemade or purchased masks have been recently updated in Canada. In light of these changes, some organizatio...ns in our communities have changed their mask policies. These policies have been put in place to help better protect you. It’s important to note that wearing any type of mask is better than not wearing one at all, but for the best protection, face coverings should: be made of at least 3 layers (2 layers should be tightly woven material fabric, such as cotton or linen and the third (middle) layer should be a filter-type fabric, such as non-woven polypropylene fabric) be large enough to completely and comfortably cover the nose, mouth and chin without gaping allow for easy breathing fit securely to the head with ties or ear loops be comfortable and not require frequent adjustments be changed as soon as possible if damp or dirty maintain its shape after washing and drying The CDC has great advice for those who are looking for more information: https://www.cdc.gov//prevent-get/about-face-coverings.html

Children and youth need the right balance throughout their day to help them learn, grow and develop. This includes getting enough sleep, consuming nutritious food and drinks, being physically active, and managing stress. Participating in these healthy behaviours can also keep their immune system working properly, which can reduce their risk of getting colds, flu, and other viruses such as COVID-19. The new school year is around the corner, and it may look different from usual. Canada’s food guide can help. Whether you’re packing lunches and snacks for school or eating at home, involve your kids in planning and preparation. This helps them develop important food skills and healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. Try these ideas: Let them choose. Sit down together and make a list of different meals and snacks your kids enjoy. Make sure the list includes a varie...ty of vegetables, fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods. Assign a task. Young kids can wash vegetables and fruits. Older kids can assemble their own meals and snacks. Try new recipes together. Swap kid-friendly recipes with friends or find recipes online. Let your kids choose ones that look good to them. Encourage learning. Talk to your kids about what makes a healthy meal. https://food-guide.canada.ca//involving-kids-in-planning-/
