Wisdom of the Elders: Who is an Elder? An Elder is an individual known in the First Nation as someone who has a vision for the people and is willing to share and work towards achieving it. Elders are aware of this purpose and will give whatever help is needed. They are involved in every aspect of community life. Historically, Elders understood and shared the knowledge, history, ceremonies, songs, dances, medicines and cultural background for their nation. The Creator provid...ed them with the lessons necessary to help ensure a healthy, happy, and productive life. They passed this knowledge down to the next generation. As well, families their systems and relationswere the foundation of the nation. Elders set the example for the people to ensure their family’s survival and thus the nation’s survival. This is often still the case today as Elders contribute a sense of harmony and well-being to their First Nations, as they are people who have lived, for example, the Anishinaabe bimaatiziwin (Anishinaabe life). Elders understand that they are role models for the way people should be living their lives. By modelling correct behaviours, Elders set the First Nation’s standards of behaviour. On the other hand, due to colonization and other factors, in today’s First Nations not all older people have the knowledge necessary to be Elders. Some began their experiential learning later in life, some went to residential school and were not able to learn their traditions, some cannot perform the physical tasks necessary for ceremonies. Nevertheless, it is important to respect all those who are advanced in age. In pre-contact days there was usually one way of life followed in each nation or family grouping, whereas today there are many definitions and belief systems in each First Nation. Elders teach that we still need to respect each other in the First Nation territory, and when interacting with other nations. See more

The Seven Sacred Teachings The Beaver teaches us wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to make decisions based on personal knowledge and experience. ... The building of a community is entirely dependent on gifts given to each member by the creator and how these gifts are used. The Beaver’s example of using his sharp teeth for cutting trees and branches to build his dams and lodges expresses this teaching. If he did not use his teeth, the teeth would continue to grow until they became useless, ultimately making it impossible for him to sustain himself. The same can be said for human beings. One’s spirit will grow weak if it is not fulfilling its use. When used properly however, these gifts contribute to the development of a peaceful and healthy community.
