Sure, we all used highways less than usual in 2020 but that doesn't mean car accidents won't take place on the few occasions we venture out for grocery shopping or other essential travel, especially since we're in the midst of a snowy and icy Canadian winter. Now we're in New Year's Resolution season, pick something you can truly stick to - driving safely and abiding by all traffic laws at all times. When everyone works together, Ontarian roads become a safer place. Unfortunately, we know that accidents still happen and if you're the victim of a winter car accident that wasn't your fault, turn to MG Law for the experienced, dedicated support you need.

While a white winter makes for beautiful landscapes and imagery, it can make for very dangerous driving conditions. Sometimes you don’t have a choice but to drive. Other times, the nasty weather seemingly begins out of nowhere. In any case, it’s good to be prepared in case your car breaks down or you end up stranded on a highway. By packing a winter driving kit and keeping it in your car, you’ll be prepared to wait for the snow to stop or a tow truck to arrive without worr...y. Make sure your kit includes these items: Snow shovel and snow brush Warning devices such as flashlights, flares or emergency lights Extra windshield wiper fluid Blanket and warm clothes First aid kit Snack bars or other emergency food supplies A car charger for your phone

With winter comes snow, slush and lots of ice, especially in Ottawa. The thought of slipping or falling doesn’t seem to be a big concern for many, until you’ve fallen. In the unfortunate situation that you’ve slipped, it’s important to take steps to ensure you’re okay before standing up and continuing on your journey, especially if the fall is due to someone else’s negligence. 1. Don’t immediately stand up or let anyone help you up. Take a minute to see how your feel, how yo...ur head feels and the severity of your injuries. 2. If you’re able to stand up, roll to your side. Bend your knees towards you carefully and push with your arms to stand. 3. If you feel you need emergency assistance, please don’t hesitate. Use your cellphone and call 911. In many communities, the fire department is actually available to come and assist victims of a slip or fall. 4. Don’t leave the scene too quickly. Assess the situation and determine whether or not you’re fall and subsequent injuries are the fault of someone else’s negligence. Take photographs of the scene and your injuries. Get statements and contact information from witnesses and make sure you report your accident to the proper people. If you’ve hurt yourself, make sure to go to the doctor and get a detailed report of your injuries and then consult a lawyer as soon as your able. MG Law is here to help if you’ve been injured due to someone else’s neglect.

Friday the 13th is coming soon. But do more road traffic accidents occur on this "unlucky" day? In 2002, Simo Näyhä released a study on this subject. Discovering that anxiety from superstition was more prevalent in females than males, this interesting study reminds us all how powerful superstitions can be. Ultimately, it's important to remind ourselves that car accidents can happen any place, any time, no matter what day it is. If you're involved in a car accident and need help navigating the aftermath, MG Law is here to help. Our team will guide you through the complex legal, medical, and insurance issues. This way, you can focus on what's really important - making a full recovery!

Familiar with the term "body clock"? Our body's "biological clock", or 24-hour cycle (circadian rhythm) is affected by light or darkness, in turn making our body think it's time to sleep or wake up. This has particular repercussions for drivers, especially this fall. On Sunday, November 2, Daylight Saving Time will see clocks go back one hour. During this period of adjustment, be aware that the risk of fatigued driving increases. A 2007 road safety survey from Your Government at Work found that 60% of Canadian drivers admitted to occasionally driving while fatigued. Remember, tired driving can kill!

The September Equinox is coming and that means taking extra care when driving. On September 22, the sun will be exactly above the Equator and day and night will be of equal length. In other words, sun glare between the first 15 to 45 minutes after sunrise and before sunset will make driving more difficult. Remember to: - Wear sunglasses during daytime hours - Wash your car windscreen just before September 22 - Use streets that run north / south where possible

Car accidents don't just involve collisions. Last month, a tragic accident occurred on the 401 where a trailer tire flew off and killed a fellow driver. As wretched as that sounds, tire blowouts are preventable. Remember, it's always the driver's responsibility to ensure all tires are roadworthy before every journey. Riding with low tire pressures or over-inflated wheels puts you, and other drivers, in immediate danger.

Chances are you've felt anxious about returning to work because of concerns over COVID-19. But can you flat out refuse to return? Ultimately, if a workplace still poses a clear danger to the health and safety of its employees, then refusals may be deemed reasonable. Right now, professions exempt from this right include police officers, firefighters, correctional officers and hospital workers.

A rear view mirror lets you see what is approaching from behind and makes it easier to check traffic before passing Reflective clothing helps you to be seen by other vehicles on the road.
