The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is extending the deadline for Canadians to file their annual tax returns because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As announced by the federal government on March 18, all Canadian citizens will have until June 1 to submit their 2019 returns to the CRA instead of the usual deadline of April 30. If you owe the government money, you now have until September 1, 2020 to settle up interest-free. The extension relief applies to tax balances due as well as ins...tallments. For self-employed individuals or those who have spouses or common-law partners that are self-employed, the deadline to pay any balance due for your individual income tax and benefit return has been extended from April 30, 2020, to September 1, 2020. Please keep in mind that although the deadlines for filing have been extended, if you receive HST/GST or Trillium Benefit or Child Tax Benefit, these programs run July to June, and require information from your filed tax return. If you do not file until later, you will miss out on some payments before it gets settled later in the year.
