Giving Hope for Mental Health is a local Medicine Hat campaign you likely heard about last summer. We launched the campaign in April 2021 with the goal of raising $500,000 for the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, outpatient support programs, and the Medicine Hat Recovery Centre. Ten months into the campaign, the community has raised $170,000 and the donations are already making a real difference. We know that time feels different for the children and families in our pediatric ward. We want to make a positive difference and help our little ones pass their stay with us in comfort. That is why our team is in need of DVD players. Our team will purchase DVD players from Best Buy ($50) to deliver to our patient rooms in the pediatric wards for children and families to pass the time with their favorite stories and familiar characters. Currently, we only have 2 DVD pl...ayers that rotate through rooms. We will also accept new or gently used DVD players. The security guard, a new friend, brought Hope to the hospital's screening station. There she was asked a few screening questions and had her temperature taken. Teddy Bears bring comfort to everyone that is feeling unwell. Our Emergency department on average sees 7,500 children each year. Having a teddy bear to squeeze helps them be brave. Please support the annual Teddy Bear toss.

Michelle Kearns hasn’t seen her family in 16 months. They live in Saskatchewan, and because of the pandemic and her job, she has stayed away, doing what she can... to help keep them safe. You’re going to make me cry, says Kearns, her voice cracking. I’d like to see my family. Kearns, administrative support at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, is tired. Her entire team is tired, but they continue to work hard. We’re doing our best to make sure everyone is looked after not only our patients and their families, but our co-workers as well, she says. If your child is sick and needs immediate medical attention, bring them to the hospital, she says. That’s why it’s there. We don’t want to turn people away and that’s not what we’re doing. But remember that the COVID-19 restrictions are in place for a reason, to keep you and your family safe, as well as us and our co-workers, she adds. Wearing a mask is not only keeping yourself safe. It keeps those around you safe, too. There’s a bigger picture here. We’ve had to go through worse. Just wear a mask. It’s not that hard.

In honour of World Prematurity Day, the Health Foundation would like to raise awareness around this health matter. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), premature births are the leading cause of death in children under five-years-old since many of them face longterm complications.
