In my capacity as Treasurer for a small registered charity I often have to answer questions regarding donations and receipting. Below is what people should know about donating to auctions organized by registered charities. There are the two sides affected at fundraising auctions: Person who donates the item (donor), and Person who buys the item (winning bidder)... Official donation receipts to donors: A registered charity can issue an official donation receipt to the donor for the fair market value of the item at the time it is donated to the charity. It must be noted that the donated item may be subject to the Deemed Fair Market Value rule, so it is very important to consult a tax professional when organizing auctions. Also, if the fair market value of the donated item cannot be established, a receipt cannot be issued. Official donation receipts to winning bidders: Generally, a registered charity cannot issue an official donation receipt to the bidders. However, where the value of an item can be determined and is made known to all participating bidders, ahead of time and where the amount paid for the item exceeds the posted value, a registered charity can issue an official donation receipt for the eligible amount of the gift (i.e., where the posted value of the item does not exceed 80% of the accepted bid.). It must be noted that same rules apply for regular and silent auctions. There is an excellent example on CRAs website: https://www.canada.ca//fundraising-events-issuing-receipts
