The reason we do not leave the TOMATO PLANTS we sell outside in temperatures below 10 C.... And Peppers 15 C.... =================================== EXCERPT: "What you may not think about when you see blossoms and fruit developing, is that low temperatures experienced by the plant weeks before flower buds were visible, can also affect flowering and fruit set.... A tomato plant which experiences temperatures below 15.5 C (60 F) for extended periods of time will begin to flower profusely. These flowers may remain open on the plant for several weeks, without fruit being formed. Larger flowers and increased branching of clusters can show up as a result of low temperatures experienced by the plant weeks before flower buds are visible. Believe it or not Daytime temperatures of 15.5C (60F) with night-time temperatures of 10C (50F), four to five weeks before a tomato flower cluster blooms, may result in misshapen or catfaced fruit. Fact Night temperatures of 7-10C (45-50F) during pepper flower development can cause the fruit to be smaller than normal, or somewhat misshapen. Chilling and freezing injury of tomato and pepper fruit The fruit of warm season crops like tomato and pepper can be injured by low temperatures. Chilling injury occurs in tomato fruit if they experience temperatures of 10 C for longer than 14 days or temperatures of 5 C for more than 6 to 8 days. Tomato fruit exposed to a shorter duration of low temperatures may still be prone to storage problems, even if obvious injury did not occur in the field. Pepper fruit can be injured by prolonged temperatures below 8 C." http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/engli//facts/info_tomtemp.htm.

GOT TO WONDER IF: THESE SUPPOSED "GREEN NEW DEALERS" WILL DESTROY SMALL ORGANIC FARMS (Whole Foods - owned by Jeff Bazos will PROFIT)..... Look at how Amazon is profiting now from pandemic while your small, local retail businesses are being destroyed......... (Check out what they are doing to small farmers in India - see other post.) https://www.facebook.com//a.10150142479/10158342746814934/

I think we're pretty much sold out of tomatoes... Garlic: We've started planting the (maybe 1/2 done or better)... We're still trying to finish closing in the greenhouse and Anna has started storing the wood in the shed for winter.... Dill: We still have lots of dill for those who want some.... I have harvested the heads for seed for next year and we will have plants for sale and seed I expect in the spring. This year was DIFFERENT...... We sold lots of tomato plants in the spring... A lot more than usual..(Nice!).... We grew about 6,000 garlic and tried as usual to keep 1/2 for seed but that didn't happen.... I bought about a half dozen hot varieties at the garlic festival for seed and have planted....We'll sell a few next year but expect most we will keep for seed to build up the inventory for 2022.... Grew more corn than usual this year and froze 34 lbs. for our needs and sold a little and harvested rest for seed... SOooo.... The plan is to plant a bunch of Golden Bantam next year to sell at the Honour Stand (hopefully for a profit)..... We've collected lots of sunflower seeds as well.... We should have harvested more pumpkins but when the deer come in early and eat off the first flowers this cuts the yields by a half to two thirds I figure.... I'll probably give another update next month... Until then happy and safe Trick or Treating!..... Keep the little ones safe.... See more
