Describing addiction as a chronically relapsing brain disease is intended to decrease stigma, but may actually increase it. https://www.recoveryanswers.org//describing-addiction-chr/

How to Cut Back or Quit Drinking When the Pandemic Has Pushed You Into the Danger Zone. It’s no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has created added stress for people of all ages. And for many, they’ve turned to alcohol as a means of coping. I have many clients who work from home who have acknowledged starting to drink earlier in the day because they can. For many, the pandemic simply made an existing drinking problem worse. Whereas for others this is the first time they’ve... had a problem with alcohol. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, there are many helpful resources and tools to choose from when making a plan to cut back your drinking or stop drinking altogether. https://michaelwalsh.com/covid-pandemic-quit-drinking #alcoholusedisorder #cutback #cutbackdrinking #stopdrinking #change #COVID19 #COVIDBC #alcoholism

Triaging your needs with a Recovery Coach. A Recovery Coach, or Sober Coach, is an excellent place to start when you have substance use concerns. The road to recovery is rarely the same for any two people, and it’s helpful to have someone with personal and professional experience to help you piece together a plan that is best suited for you and your life.... https://michaelwalsh.com//2021-04-07-why-a-recovery-coach- #recoverycoach #sobercoach #change #sobriety #recovery #moderation #explore #rehab #alcoholusedisorder #notquitereadytostopyet #talktome #zerojudgement #empathy #alcoholrehab #drugrehab #addiction

The Power of Invitation When Planning a Drug or Alcohol Intervention. Most people are surprised to learn that interventions don’t have to be confrontational. They don’t have to look anything like the interventions you’ve probably seen on reality tv shows. The ones with a dramatic interventionist promoting secrecy, and lots of suspense and unnecessary chaos. That style works well for making an entertaining Netflix series, but the truth is, there’s a much better approach for in...tervention, and it boasts a higher success rate than the drama-filled version. What is an invitational intervention? An invitational intervention encourages open dialogue as opposed to secrecy, and is based on inviting your loved one to a family meeting to address concerns about their substance use and explore treatment options. To learn more about the differences between a surprise and invitational intervention and how we might be able to assist you as you navigate a current situation click the link for the rest of the article. https://michaelwalsh.com//2021-03-24-the-power-of-invitati #intervention #interventionist #familysystems #craftmodel #craftmodelofaddiction #alcohol #alcoholrehab #alcoholtreatment #drugrehab #drugaddiction #alcoholusedisorder #stopdrinking #change

Using the Craft Model for Addiction to Support a Loved One With a Drinking or Drug Concern. Watching someone you love battle addiction is one of the most painful experiences imaginable. Whether it’s a child, parent, relative, spouse, or friend the heartbreak, and confusion often leave people feeling isolated and desperate. We only use the evidence based CRAFT Model for Addiction with all family clients. We get it because we've been there ourselves, and we've helped many f...amilies who’ve been there too. It can feel like you’re trapped on an emotional rollercoaster, circling through conflicting emotions of guilt, self-blame, frustration, anger, sadness, and anxiety. Afraid you might push your loved one away, but knowing you can’t go on living in the chaos. The good news is that there is support available, and you don’t have to travel this road alone. #addictionrecovery #addictionawareness #addictionhelp #recoverycapital #recoverycoach #craftmodelforaddiction #interventions #invitationalinterventions #alcoholism #alcoholawareness #drugaddiction #changemaker #recoveryispossible #drrobertmeyers #familysystems https://michaelwalsh.com//2021-03-12-how-to-help-someone-y

Recovery Coaching helped changed my life. For 8 years I had been in steady recovery from a substance use disorder with my anxiety and depression under control. In the summer of 2019 I relapsed. My wife, who is very supportive and understanding, was considering whether it would be best for my recovery, for her and our children to end our marriage. Interestingly, this was all happening in the middle of some very positive events. Before my relapse, our marriage was fairly h...ealthy, our young adult and teenage kids were doing great, and I had just succeeded in moving a new business venture past a major milestone with a financial windfall around the corner. Apparently relapse can spring back to life in good times and bad. I felt vulnerable once again and confused as to why I had failed. The way forward seemed very unclear. I was told about a Recovery Coach named Michael Walsh. For me, I think the goal oriented and accountability nature of sobriety coaching has been very helpful beyond just staying sober. "My initial meeting with Michael was not dramatic. I appreciated that he didn't over-promise or hit me with hype and emotion. A key part of our conversation was to establish some basic goals with a realistic timeline. The initial goal was to try and stay abstinent for one month. I remember driving away feeling a glimmer of hope knowing that I needed to be realistic and take responsibility. Addiction is a family affliction. In "family systems" problematic substance use and addiction affects everyone. Change in any part of the family system leads to changes in all parts of the system. The addiction of a loved one brings up many difficult questions that may leave the family unable to understand what and why this is happening, and feeling like they are riding an emotional rollercoaster they can’t get off. Our Family Consulting service can help make sense of your ...situation and provide you tools and strategies for each family member to take care of themselves and learn how to communicate effectively with your loved one. We can help guide you through the process of getting your loved-one help while bringing the family together. We can do this in person or through distance communication whether telephone or video-conferencing. We utilize the evidence-based CRAFT (Community Reinforcement & Family Training) process in all our work with those affected by someone else’s substance use. Link in Bio. See more

I want to let friends and colleagues know that I'm moving to Duncan this month. Not Duncan Oklahoma! I came back to the Island in 2002 with literally $3 in my pocket after spiralling out of control using alcohol and drugs. So much has shifted for me over the years. Victoria has and will continue to share a special place in my heart so much good has happened here for me. Not much is really changing other than I'll be living in Duncan. I have many clients in Victoria and will continue to commute 2-3 days a week and maintain my shared-office space at 1080 Meares Street. I will be building my Sober Coaching and Intervention practice in the Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo and Vancouver moving forward. I can be reached by phone/text at 250 896 8494 and through my website at MichaelWalsh.com.
