FAQ FRIDAY Springtime in the Rockies? When does springtime come to the Rockies? Bit by bit we’ll see glimpses of it over the next several weeks, but winter i...s not over. Historically, March and April are the snowiest months of the year here in RMNP. The park can get 2 ft and even 3 ft snowstorms in the spring. But we also get little signs of spring - the first wildflowers (look for Easter daisies and snow buttercups now and Pasqueflowers in another couple of weeks) and spring birds (mountain bluebirds now; look for warblers next month). If you come here in the spring, be prepared with layers of clothing and sturdy waterproof boots. Backcountry trails have spring conditions now, which means the snow can be sticky when you wear snowshoes but if you don’t you’ll posthole. There’s still 4 feet of snow at Bear Lake. Trail Ridge Road/US Hwy 34 is not scheduled to open for the season until May 22, and even then it may temporarily close due to snow up on the mountaintops. Ahhh, springtime in the Rockies!
