NOT COOL!!! Spent the morning picking these lil ers from my emerging lilies. If you grow lilies I know you can feel my pain through this post. If you are thinking of growing or have started growing lilies for the first time, expect these guys to take over very quickly. Lily beetles. If you are not on top of them they will DESTROY your lilies in no time. They overwinter in the soil. They hide in between and underneath the leaves. If they are disturbed they drop and hide on ...their back so you can’t spot them as their black bellies blend in with the soil. Just wait...It gets worse... they lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves. When they hatch, the larvae COVER THEM SELVES IN THEIR OWN POOP so nothing on earth will want to touch them. How do you keep them away? First I pick the beetles with tweezers and put them in a jar of soapy water. I picked about 30 this@morning. I check on them@almost every day. Second, spray (drench) the plants with a mixture of water, neem oil (I do about 3 tbsp), and a squirt of dish soap. Third, when I see poopy larvae, I just pick off the whole leaf They progressively get worse every year... Had a couple showings in Akinsdale , St. Albert (Akinsdale Gardens to be exact) and had a trip down memory lane. I grew up in Akinsdale and went to Gish school from kindergarten to grade 9 (Gish Lifer right here! ). Some of my best memories are walking to sev (7-11) with my bffs to get 5cent candies during lunch break.
