Lateral Hip Pain Series - Part 1/3 One common cause of lateral hip pain is gluteal tendinopathy, often referred to as greater trochanteric pain syndrome. This injury presents as pain and tenderness over the outside of your hip, and can limit your sleep, daily function, and exercise activities. Often patients will receive a diagnosis of bursitis, and while the bursa can definitely become irritated, tendinopathy of the glute medius and/or minimus muscles is the more li...kely culprit. This condition can start due to a sudden change in activity, repetitive activity like walking or running, compressive load to the tendon, or sometimes without cause. Whats the best way to deal with a tendinopathy? Since a tendon is an active tissue, the best way to help it heal is to LOAD IT! Stay tuned for some exercises that can help load your glutes! As always, dont rely on Instagram to treat yourself and consult your healthcare practitioner for an in-depth and personalized assessment! @ Micovsky Chiropractic

"Runners Knee" series Part 1 . Runner's knee includes two common repetitive strain injuries of the knee: ITBS (Iliotibial band syndrome) and PFPS (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome) which commonly affect different types of athletes including: Runners, cyclists, triathletes, etc. . The infographic includes the location of pain for both conditions. This series we will focus on PFPS and touch back on ITBS later.... . PFPS is characterized by pain around the Patellofemoral joint complex which includes the kneecap, thigh and shin bones and soft tissue (muscles, tendons, etc)/ nerves around it. These structures can further be divided into active (ie muscles) and passive (ie. Ligaments, tendons etc.) Pain usually occurs with adding weight to the knee with various movements. . Along with pain in PFPS you may have some grinding, clicking, swelling and or tracking issues of the kneecap. . Along with addressing the knee with PFPS, treatment needs to include the hip and feet because the muscles, range of motion, and nerves of these joints will directly affect how the knee moves and how the patella tracks. . Keep in mind that Runner's Knee can affect more than just runners and abnormal biomechanics/imbalances of strength of the lower extremity, and quality of footwear can affect PFPS. . Stay tuned for exercises and treatment options that can help with PFPS. - - - As always, dont rely on Instagram to treat yourself and consult your healthcare practitioner for an in-depth and personalized assessment. @ Micovsky Chiropractic

Achilles Tendinopathy Series - Part 3/3 . We know that exercise is an effective treatment for Achilles tendinopathy...but what else can help? . There are various modalities and treatments that can act an an *adjunct* to exercise (exercise should always be the main part of the treatment plan!) ... . Some of these may include: * Low level laser therapy * Shockwave therapy * Injections * Acupuncture * Orthotics, heel lift, night splint, or shoe modification (e.g. choosing a running shoe with a higher drop height) * Taping * Manual therapy techniques The research is uncertain if there is one treatment superior to others, but we do know that wait-and-see is not effective. What works for one person may not work for another, so sometimes you may have to try a few things before you find what works for you . As always, dont rely on Instagram to treat yourself and consult your healthcare practitioner for an in-depth and personalized assessment! . Achilles Tendinopathy Series - Part 1/3 . What is Achilles Tendinopathy? . The Achilles tendon is a strong structure that attaches the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the back of heel bone (calcaneus). These muscles act to plantarflex the foot (pushing the foot down, like on a gas pedal). ... . The Achilles tendon can become overused or overloaded due to a variety of different factors (e.g. increasing activity level too much or too quickly), which can lead to increased sensitivity and weakening of the tendon over time. . The pain can be located at the insertion (bottom), midportion, or junction of the Achilles/calf. Its often worse at the beginning of an activity and may lesson as you get going, but then can worsen once you stop the activity. . Factors such as recent or sudden changes in type or level of activity, footwear, certain foot biomechanics, or decreased ankle strength and range of motion can all contribute to Achilles tendinopathy. . Stay tuned for exercises and treatment options that can help with Achilles tendinopathy rehab - - - As always, dont rely on Instagram to treat yourself and consult your healthcare practitioner for an in-depth and personalized assessment. @ Micovsky Chiropractic
