Relationships can be stressful, especially if we find it difficult to communicate our wants and needs, stand up for ourselves or say no. Interpersonal effectiveness skills teach us practical ways to maintain valued relationships and reduce conflict while also learning ways to assert ourselves, get what we want and maintain our self respect. Our next virtual skills block covers both the core mindfulness skills and interpersonal effectiveness modules. It begins November 2 (Monday nights at 6pm). We have a few spaces open! If your interested reach out! [email protected] or www.middlepathwpg.com

With the transition to fall and all the changes and anxieties that this fall in particular brings, it is important to pay attention to the connection between our emotions and our physical body. By taking care of ourselves physically we can reduce our vulnerability to intense emotions and find ourselves in a space where it is easier to regulate our emotions. P.L.E.A.S.E. Skills help us do this! PLEASE is an acronym that serves as a reminder of how to take care of yourself a...nd reduce susceptibility to emotional outbursts. Our next virtual Multifamily Skills Block begins September 14, 2020 at 6pm contact us at [email protected] for more info! @glitterygnomie

Emotions.. what’s the point? So often when dealing with intense emotions there is a desire to just get rid of our feelings all together as they seem to get in the way or lead to unhelpful behaviours. The reality is that each emotion has a important purpose. Understanding the function of emotions is one of the first steps to learning to regulate them and gain more control over our urges. In DBT Informed Skills Group we look at three important functions of emotions: 1. Emoti...ons Communicate to and Influence Others. Our emotions communicate how we feel to others through verbal and non verbal expression. Some expressions of emotion have an automatic effect on others for example making them feel a certain way, understand our needs or intentions or motivate them to do something. 2. Emotions Organize and Motivate Action - Many emotions are hard wired to protect us and keep us safe. With the help of emotions, our bodies instinctively try to protect us in situations that seem dangerous. Emotions can also motivate us to do difficult things and push ourselves to accomplish goals 3. Emotions Can be Self-Validating Emotions can give us information about a situation. They can signal to us that something is going on that we need to check out further. @henrithebipolar
