New blog post! Our multi-talented member Karen gives us a peek into to the world of learning the traditional Japanese instrument, shamisen - and what it's like to practice a new instrument during a pandemic! Shout out to our friends, Vancouver-based performance group Dahaza, who inspire us with their multi-instrument skills, and to Bachido for inspiring the love of shamisen worldwide! #taikoyyc #yycarts #calgaryarts #taiko
What practice looks like when it’s 8 degrees outside. I can’t feel my fingers!

Calgary's Omatsuri is always a highlight for us. There is no festival this year of course, but we look forward to celebrating this amazing festival's 10 year anniversary in the future when the time is right! Here are some shots from the last couple of years at Omatsuri :) Be sure to watch for updates on the festival here: https://calgaryjapanesefestival.com/... #calgary #yyc #calgaryomatsuri #calgaryjapanesefestival #cjca
Last month we participated in a Taiko Challenge coordinated by the Los Angeles Taiko Institute and Asano Taiko USA We're grateful to Yuta-Sensei and the other great folks at LATI, and to Katsuji-San at Asano, for coming up with such a creative way to inspire taiko players from around the world (literally!) to have some fun and do something productive and gratifying during this pandemic. STARTING JULY 19th... We are participating in a SECOND CHALLENGE to see which g...roup will log the most practice minutes per person over the course of a month. And for that, we have challenged MUKAITO TAIKO of ARGENTINA! Looking forward to making new Argentinian friends, and improving our taiko skills GANBATTE KUDASAI!
Well... last night's practice was the last time we'll be seeing these two for a little while as they go off to have their baby . We decided it was a little too early to buy a mini drum for the wee one, so we sent them off with a few other things they might be able to make use of in the mean time. CONGRATULATIONS, JOE and LORIE! We can't wait to meet the baby!
