Know any midwives that would be a great fit for our clinic? We’ve got a position opening up!
Regram from @shebirths Incredible view of the umbilical cord against the light, with its two thin arteries on the right and the thick vein on the left. . All three blood vessels are covered with a flexible, cushioning substance called Wharton's Jelly which helps protect them and modulate the pressure of contractions, allowing regular blood flow and optimal baby oxygenation. . Like hair and nails the umbilical cord does not contain nerves, so it does not hurt or cause any se...nsation when pinching and / or cutting it. . Current evidence shows that it is not necessary to apply alcohol to the cut cord since it can damage the baby's skin and also eliminate the bacteria necessary for the cord tissue to dry properly and fall. Instead, it is suggested to ventilate the belly button area frequently (skin-to-skin contact is ideal for this). . Avoid pulling or ripping the cord; it falls off on its own and like everything in motherhood, there is no rush . . Repost from @ottawabirthcentre To a Bright and Meaningful Hanukkah!
We had to share this again! :)
Welp, our wifi was upgraded on Monday and the clinic hasn’t had the internet since. Very frustrating! If you’ve been waiting for a response to an email, please just give the clinic a call at 613-729-9957.
A comprehensive mini conference for soon to be and new families via Zoom!
It was the middle of the night, and the midwife quietly walked into her house with all of her equipment in tow. She quietly walked up the stairs to see a hard w...orking mama preparing to birth her baby. In a pandemic, it is hard to decide where to have your baby. The hospital? At home? She unpacks her things, sets up all of the equipment needed for any major emergencies that might happen. All the while, the mother is busy doing the hard work. Moving from front-to-back, side-to-side. She is working with her body, trying to figure out how best to bring this baby home. The midwife remains quiet, preserving the space, trying to facilitate and not interrupt this important process. A long time ago, midwives weren't even able to give clients their IV antibiotics at home, we needed to consult with physicians. Now, we can provide exceptional care anywhere. On this specific night, the midwife helped this woman bring her baby earth side, with full personal protective equipment on. She cleaned her foggy glasses, and stood high on the bed as a makeshift IV pole, so this mother could get her antibiotics and some hydration after her long day of contractions. Let us not forget that midwives too are apart of this pandemic, and we are out there on the front lines willing as ever to make each birth as important as the last. We are working the same hours, 24 hours at a time, starting IV's, measuring pregnant bellies, counselling clients on what to do, guiding nervous and excited partners on their journey as well as helping big brothers and sisters hold their "new baby". Congratulations to this mama and her family on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby boy on this cold and wintery night. Share this if you love a midwife! (Photo shared with permission)
Today is World Prematurity Day Of the many words that come to mind, like courage, strength, resilience and bravery, advocacy is a big one in the Nicu. Midwives can still play a role in advocating for clients and their premature babies even when care has obviously been transferred.
Join us on Thursday December 10th from 10am to 11am for a live presentation on "Understanding and Healing Birth Trauma" with Christiane Laflèche, MSW, RSW in Collaboration with Women's Mental Health at The Royal Ottawa
To know Rosemarie Parisien is to love her! She has been a midwife with us since 2017. What a great smile under that mask!
Wishing you all a Happy Diwali!
Midwife Rachel Stewart Pathak came to MGO for her first year of practice after graduation. In her free time Rachel likes to do yoga, play basketball and play with her new puppy! Sadly Rachel will be leaving us at the end of January to pursue new adventures in Toronto. She says she will miss her Ottawa clients and colleagues very much!
