You can sponsor a child to attend camp, and memoralize a loved one at the same time with Camp Sheldrake's Memorial Board. The board has been placed in the main lodge at Camp Sheldrake in Bartibog Bridge. For a minimum donation of $500, a deceased loved one’s name will be placed on the Board and a child will be sponsored in the deceased loved one’s name to attend one week of camp. The Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club (MCCSC) welcomes everyone to come check them out this winter for fun and fitness! The MCCSC is located in Nelson and offers cross- country skiing (also called Nordic skiing), biathlon and snowshoeing. Last season saw the opening of a new clubhouse and biathlon range and trail upgrades. For evening skiiers there are 4 km of lit trails, which makes it easy to ski after work or supper. On Saturday, December 19th, there will be a 12 Days of Christmas Scavenger Hunt going on in Downtowns Newcastle. Pick up your scavenger hunt list on Saturday morning at either the Newcastle Jean Coutu or Dickison’s Pharmasave. Join the Friends of Beaubears Island for a Walking Tour of Historic Nelson on December 12 from noon until 3pm. The tour will begin at the Ile Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre and will feature commentary on several historic sites in the Nelson area, including Saint Patrick’s Church (pictured here), the Nelson Post Office, Nelson Rural School, Governor’s Mansion, the Nelson Senior Citizens Centre, and a good deal more. Local guides will lead the outdoor tour for individually bubbled groups, to ensure a safe, social distanced event. Click below for details.

The annual Christmas Bird Count is a fun way to learn about the hardy birds that are able to spend the winter in New Brunswick. Miramichi will be joining with participants from all over North America to find and identify as many birds as possible in 24 hours within a 24 km diameter circle. Counts in our area will take place in: Red Bank/Sunny Corner on December 19; Miramichi on December 20; and Burnt Church/New Jersey on January 2. The 8th Annual Purse Auction - Lovin’ Louis with the Rotary Club of Newcastle will be held as an Online Auction this year, from Oct. 23 to 30. This auction will feature a spectacular variety of purses, gift baskets, jewellery and gift certificates. Registering for the auction is free. Blackville’s First Lawn Tractor Race will be held in Cains River, on Saturday, October 17th. This is our first race and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the family’s of the boys who were lost in a tragic car accident. There will be all classes, and it’s $20 to enter your tractor. Registration begins at 12 NOON, flag drops at 2pm. Admission is $5/adult and $2/child under 12.

A new mural was added to the rear of the building and was designed and painted by the amazingly talented, Jaclyn Martinez and Matt Williston. The Napan Car Show will be held on Friday, September 25 at the Napan Agricultural Show’s Hall. Registration is $5, beginning at 4pm, with prizes awarded at 6:30pm. There will also be Cut the Jack Tickets sold, and Pizza, Garlic Fingers and Pasta Salad will be served for just $5 and $3 for dessert.

The Levi Family and the community of Metepenagiag invite all allies, friends and those who love baseball to the First Annual Ball Tournament from September 18 to 20 2020 on the Metepenagiag First Nation. This event will mark the grand opening of the Rodney Levi Memorial Ball Field. There will be 50/50 draws, food and drinks, fireworks on Friday and a Co-Ed Tournament. August through November is the time to be looking out for southwardly migrating shorebirds. Peter Gadd of the Miramichi Naturalists Club shares photos and insights into the many locations in Northumberland County where they may be found. We have many miles of sandy beaches bordering the saltwater of Miramichi Bay and the Northumberland Straight, the preferred feeding grounds of these birds as they make their way south, many flying many thousands of kilometers to their winter homes. Bookstores, publishers, and literary organizations across New Brunswick are teaming up to launch the first ever I’m Buying an NB Book! Day. The aim of this rallying event, which fosters curiosity and pride, is to highlight New Brunswick authors and increase sales of their books in local bookstores. On Saturday, September 19, readers of all ages are encouraged to visit a bookstore or retail location, or to shop online through their favourite bookseller or publisher, to purchase books by New Brunswick authors.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and the Alzheimer Society is raising awareness with its new rock-hiding campaign, the Forget-Me-Not-Rock Challenge. Until the end of September, you can join the fun by finding their rocks or by painting and hiding your own. Every Friday from now until Sept 25th, they will be giving away a pair of forget-me-not socks to someone that’s participated in the social media challenge. Read more below!

The Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions is running a fun creative writing opportunity for youth ages 7 to 30. Youth are encouraged to submit a story that features Canadian agriculture. Winners will receive a published copy of their book and a cash prize. Six books will be published! The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of children's books about Canadian agriculture. The deadline to participate is September 25, 2020.

Volunteering can be a rewarding experience and a chance to assist the community in a lasting way, learn new skills, and meet new people. Camp Sheldrake is erecting a Memorial Board as a way for families to honour deceased loved ones by sponsoring a child to attend camp. For a minimum donation of $500, a loved one’s name will be placed on the plaque and a child will be sponsored in the deceased loved one’s name. The plaque will be unveiled at Camp Sheldrake’s annual general meeting on Saturday, September 12 at 11 am. Families who have donated to this memorial are invited to attend the ceremony. A light lunch will be served afterwards.
