Montreal: Get yer dancin shoes on!

Migrant Rights Network 06.01.2021

ORGANIZING WORKS! For months, migrant student workers shared our stories, signed petitions, called MPs, and organized public actions. And WE WON. We stopped mass deportations of tens of thousands of people! The federal government has made post graduate work permits (PGWPs) renewable, for the first time ever in Canadian history. ++ More information will be coming soon, so SIGN UP TO STAY CONNECTED: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/msuconnect/ ++ Support us to continue to organ...ize and win: http://migrantworkersalliance.org/donate/ The fight is not over. Many migrant student workers are in essential jobs, but our work is not valued or counted towards permanent immigration status because it is low-waged and deemed low-skilled. We know that it is the work we do delivery, warehousing, construction, retail, care which sustains society. We will continue to take action so that all our work is valued. This isn’t just a victory for migrant student workers. It’s a victory for all migrant and undocumented people because it shows that together we can organize to win the changes we deserve. Now, more than ever, we must all unite for full and permanent immigration status for all and build the world we want to live in.

Quebec curfew raise serious questions. Will police ID people on their way to and home from work? Will this increase racial profiling, detentions and deportations? François Legault must ensure that the lockdown does not further harm migrants already shut out from support.

Today is International Migrants Day, 2020. For migrants, 2020 has been a human rights catastrophe. We have been the front line of the COVID crisis, and have been excluded from even basic healthcare and income support in a pandemic. 2020 is also the year of our courage. In the face of hunger and sickness, together with you, we raised our voices and our fists.... Reflect with us: https://migrantrights.ca/imd2020/ and share.

DONATE GENEROUSLY! #StatusForAll Amador Alcantara Segundo is a migrant farm worker who has been coming to Canada for more than 20 years. This year he was sent h...ome mid-season, leaving his family with no income to cover major medical bills. Amador and his family need your help! Please donate now. Amador is the nephew of Juan Lopez Chaparro, who passed away on June 20, 2020, the third migrant farm worker to die of COVID-19 in Canada. Amador and Juan worked together at Scotlynn Farms, the site of one of the largest outbreaks of COVID-19 in Ontario. After his uncle's death, Amador was sent back to Mexico by his employer with the promise that he would be brought back again to work. This never happened, and now the season has ended, leaving Amador and his family without income. The family has since been hit with medical and other emergencies, leaving them with bills they cannot pay. While dealing with grief and family crisis, Amador testified in the case of his coworker Gabriel Flores, who was fired by Scotlynn for speaking out about dangerous living and working conditions, including the lack of medical attention for coworkers like Juan who were falling ill with COVID-19. By speaking out, Amador has risked his ability to work in Canada next year. Now he needs our solidarity. Read his story in the Toronto Star here. https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/amador

Have you read this statement and signed it? "There is a global anti-racist resurgence that is sweeping the country. Violence against, and exclusion of Black communities in particular is being challenged head on. Temporary and precarious migration is racism it excludes racialized communities from equal rights and protections. Full immigration status for all is necessary for racial justice."

Migrant Rights Network 01.07.2020

Patty Coates, president of OFL, Canadas largest provincial labour federation, said that migrant workers have been denied equal rights in Canada for far too long. This, she said, has subjected them to recruiter corruption, employer exploitation, poverty wages, treacherous work, harassment, intimidation, discrimination and threats of deportation. In Nova Scotia, migrant workers have reported alleged threats of deportation and wage theft at a farm in Great Village amid the p...andemic. A fair society requires that everyone has equal access to rights and protections and this is only possible if migrant workers, refugees, students and undocumented people have full and permanent immigration status, said Coates. Lindsey Bacigal, Indigenous Climate Action communications director, said migrants and Indigenous Peoples share similar ordeals of injustice in Canada as a result of government decisions that negatively affect us such as difficulty accessing and receiving adequate health care and struggles to meet basic needs. Bacigal said full permanent status for all is an important step in rectifying these abuses and working towards a just and equitable future where our communities can do more than just survive, but we can thrive.

Undocumented people that came to Canada as minors are being shut out of post-secondary education by high tuition fees and lack of status. We need FULL & PERMANENT immigration STATUS FOR ALL NOW. I never saw a light in the hole I was in. I had very low points, said Feijoo, S4 Collective Member. I live here. I work here.
