If I didn’t have dogs I could walk around the back yard barefoot without worry. My house could be carpeted instead of having vinyl sheeting on every floor surface because most of the dogs are incontinent. My clothes, furniture and other belongings would be free of hair. When the doorbell rings my home would not sound like a kennel. I could sit on the couch or lie in my bed the way I want to without taking into consideration how much space the dogs need to be comfortable. I w...ould not have strange presents under the Christmas tree like bones, stuffed animals, toys and treats nor would I have to explain why I have to wrap them. I would have no guilt about going on vacation. I would not be on a first name basis with five veterinarians as I put their kids through college. The most used words in my vocabulary would not be sit, stay, come, go pee pee. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates and barriers. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash. My house wouldn’t look like a daycare center with toys strewn everywhere. We just lost our beautiful old boy Buddy my heart is broken. Buddy had been slowing down over the last few months and had stopped eating. We changed his food and he started eating like a champ again but had stopped eating again yesterday. He was not feeling well this morning and we knew something was wrong so we took him right to the vet. He was having small seizures on the way to the vet and while he was being examined his heart started failing and we had to send him to He...aven. We got Buddy in March just over 6 months ago from Animal Control. Buddy had been picked up as a stray and had no name initially he was in the system as "Hammond Bay Stray" the name of the street he was found on. Animal Control was able to track down his family and they said they did not want him back so we of course went and picked him up. Buddy was a beautiful happy boy he loved puttering around the yard exploring every minute he was outside. Buddy's snuggle buddy Minnie is going to be so sad that her best friend is gone. A HUGE thank you to Dr. Jill Harrison at VCA Island Animal Hospital we love you! Thank you Buddy for letting me be your Dad we love that we could give you a safe and loving home for the last few months of your life. I am going to miss you trotting towards me always thinking I had food for you. Many of our seniors are incontinent so we go through tons of bleach to sanitize the towels and it breaks down the fibers fairly quickly. Layla is home from her surgery and resting. Thank you so much to everyone for the wonderful messages I read all of them to her from each of you when she got home. Every year we make a very special candle and light it on 911. We light it for the victims and the grieving families and friends of the victims and we light it for the over 300 rescue dogs that worked tirelessly for weeks trying to find survivors. Because of the toxic area that they worked while trying to rescue survivors and recover bodies health issues caused many of the 911 dogs to pass on before their time. Please don’t forget to include these unsung four-legged heroes in your remembrance of September 11th. #dogsof911

Grant and I were BBQing tonight after working a 12 hour day and the clouds were so beautiful. I looked up and one of the clouds looked just like Copper our beautiful old Hound we lost a year and a half ago at Christmas. By the time I grabbed my phone and took a picture his image has drifted but it looked so much like him I cried and smiled at the same time.
