What are phthalates? Phthalates are a group of chemicals with a variety of different uses & applications. Most commonly used in the manufacturing of plastics to make them more flexible & durable, but also found in pharmaceuticals, building materials, cosmetics, cleaning products, & household goods. As a candle maker, I’m mainly concerned with the phthalates used in cosmetics & home goods: DBP, DMP & DEP. It’s important I mention these because of all three, DEP is STILL ...commonly used in fragrance. A lot of companies claim to be phthalate-free then specify in fineprints they’re only free of DBP or DMP phthalates a misleading advertisement since DBP isn’t typically used in fragrance to begin with.. The fragrance industry used DEP’s extensively in the past, primarily to dissolve raw materials that go into fragrance formulas. Another common function is increasing the hot throw (fragrance/scent of candle when burned) of fragrance in soy wax. Not only are DEP’s very effective at these jobs, but they’re also easily available and inexpensive. There has been tons of research done the past decade linking phthalates to endocrine disruption, fertility issues, & cancer.. so If I can reduce this potential risk, I will. Proud to say Milk & Honey is PHTHALATE-FREE.
