Peter Cardew was a very good architect, totally committed to the field. His dedication to the art and craft of architecture and his diligence and strength in his approach was uncompromising. He harboured strong views on architecture and community which was honed by an optimism fostered through the strong architectural comradery of the 60s and 70s. Our office often enjoyed his company at our annual Christmas party and bi-weekly lunches where he engaged the younger generations at our table. In Japan generally, it is hard to get out of the surface and stand out from the crowd. Conversing with Hiroko, you are hit with a unique energy, in awe I digested the information given. From working with Kengo Kuma as an intern to coming to Canada to work, Hiroko carries a gem that I admit, was curious to see. Discussing childhoodone thing that stood out in our conversation was the love for Lego blocks. There is a childlike view I think one should have when looking or thin...king of architecture and that is clear when talking with Hiroko. The challenges set by a different set of architecture law allow Hiroko to marry the materiality of Japanese architecture with the contextual-people-integrated system of Arthur and Nick. All in all, coming to Canada from Japan, one can say there is a different standard to which architects hold themselves, Hiroko holds that balance with the experience that she has been blessed with. What strikes me is the urge to look at one’s self as a student of architect for the foreseeable future. I am still learning though, I think there is still so much that I have to learn. There is always something unique about a place you visit and things that can be brought back and applied here. Speaking to Neil, these powerful words ring soundly. I find myself longing to go back to the architecture, the spaces I have visited to test this theory. Discussing with Neil, I find myself reflecting on my own journey and how profound it was to have what seemingly was mundane be a crucial part of my architectural journey. Talking about his journey in architecture,... I find myself wanting to walk along, starting with structural engineering to having an enlightened moment knowing architecture was the right path. I find that very interesting. Before ending, I was blessed with a lesson I think is worth sharing: You have to kind of remind yourself that none of the things we do is really for ourselves and in the end it’s not my project but the act of making it with them was part of my history, growth, and developmentthat’s the best part of what we do in my mind, that’s the reason to be an architect. Basically there is a certain richness that comes out of those dialogues and interactions and there is a certain growth that comes with it, I don’t know...that sort of helps you see the world in a different way as you gain more experience. Speaking with Gail one thing is clear, there is a merge of deep Chinese and Canadian culture, speaking with the confidence of someone that knows her stuff. Pushing to see if there was any contrast between the approach and view of architecture in China and Vancouver, Gail's view o...n this matter is that as much as the space is important, the appearance, the outer look of the place, is equally important according to the Chinese view. Whereas in Canadian architecture, most often it is what is inside and the inner details that truly matter. One of the key moments of designing is at the beginning of the project where you are gathering all the information, it’s like gathering all the ingredients for a recipe, the more you have the more you can select to put in. This analogy although funny, spoke so true and resonated. Talking with Anne Gingras, you are greeted with a reserved but shy welcoming feeling. I find there is always something to learn from people who have had a lot of experience in the field of architec...turethere is this chest of gold that opens up when you ask and engage with these holders of the knowledge. That is true for Anne Gingras, who after talking to, I felt anew and pushed to rethink the way I approached architecture. Listening to Anne speak, one can’t help but bring a notepad and start writing, it’s a whole lot of humbling knowledge that could only come from one person. Things that stood out were, be patient, there are several approaches to design, and my favourite: One thing to remember, like eating food, sometimes you are not the only one at the table, everyone else has to enjoy what you make. This actually caught me off guard, because until then it had been about looking at the art and splendor from a single individual’s point of view, but to look at it from this point of view that other people have to enjoy the place as wellnow that was gold. As an architect you are constantly going to be a student, a student of the world and you must allow yourself to be open to learn. These words resonate strongly, and give evidence to the experience that allows Nick to always have a refreshing look towards the designs produced by him and his team. As a student of Arthur Erickson, a pioneer in the world of Canadian architecture, Nick has certainly brought in a new standard of architectural design that at its core shows the les...sons of Arthur with the distinct signature of Nick’s life experience. Leading with passion and example, Nick never misses a chance to listen and teach, showing an especially child-like curiosity and exuberance in the process. One gift that Nick grants as one of his numerous learning tools is the quote by Louis I. Kahn which states: I felt first of all joyous. I felt that which joy is made of, and I realized that Joy itself must have been the impelling force, that which was before we were there, and that somehow Joy was in every part of our making. When the world was an ooze without any shape or direction, there must have been Joy reaching out and expressing itself everywhere. Giving the notion that in architecture there should be a joyous vigor given to the work at hand. As the start to the NMA spotlight, it is only reasonable to start with the leader, Nick Milkovich.
