Happy chilly Sunday dear Friends of Mississippi Mills! I spent a few hours in the cold last night at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area. As usual, aimlessly ...wandering with my camera and tripod, I managed to capture some images under a very bright moonlit sky. This is the first image I'll post from last night. I hope you like it :-) See more

No ice is safe ice. Ice thickness can change drastically and without warning due to changing flows and water levels, especially around water control structures. Skating is not permitted at our conservation areas. Please act responsibly and stay safe.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Lanark-Highlands have had to extensively change their usual Lanark Highlands Frosty Fling lineup. Rather than cancel altogether; they have been working hard to create some activities that enable everyone to have fun while following all public health guidelines and stay safe!

Did you know that R. Tait McKenzie & Dr. James Naismith were great friends from young boys until McKenzie's death in 1938? McKenzie looked up to Naismith and his athleticism which led them both to believe that a "healthy body is a healthy mind". Frank Consentino wrote a book titled Brothers of the Wind which chronicles their friendship and similar achievements. Both saw physical education as a serious academic discipline. James Naismith gave basketball to the world and McKenzie left a legacy of athletic sculptures.

Sunday from the Studio showcases this beautifully crafted pine writing desk created by R. Tait McKenzie in 1931. Tait designed the desk to showcase the plaster panels and the frieze. On August 3rd, 1951 Ethel McKenzie said "the bas reliefs in the desk, designed by Tait, are the only replicas of the original panels by Gilbert, the eccentric English sculptor in King's College, Cambridge. Tait got permission from the Master of King's College to have casts made and worked them in to the desk".

Step inside the historic gristmill turned museum at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area and learn about two local historical figures who made significant impa...cts on the international stage; Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie was a physician, educator, sculptor, athlete and soldier. Dr. James Naismith, while a physical educator and physician himself, is perhaps best known for inventing the sport of basketball. See more
