"Oh look Alberta, I can see your house from here." Alberta Forest Products Association has snagged Edmonton-born actor Nathan Fillion ("The Rookie," "Firefly") to host an awesome virtual tour of our working forests. Never been to the forest? "Don’t be nervous. You’re not alone. You’ll have a healthy dollop of Nathan Fillion with you the whole time. That’s me. #nathanfillion #loveabforests Take your tour, here! https://vr.loveabforests.com/

Forest companies have a limited period of time in which to burn the brush piles resulting from harvesting operations, as we are required to do. To maintain public safety, we look for the right conditions, like cool temperatures that reduce fire hazards and good air flow to dissipate smoke, but no strong winds that could spread flames. Yesterday, when we were conducting a burning program in an area between Blue Ridge and Whitecourt, conditions changed. We stopped work, but by ...then a lack of wind had allowed heavy smoke to settle in the area, causing issues for local residents. The smoke appears to be lifting, and we hope conditions will continue to improve throughout the day. Millar Western apologizes for the very smoky conditions people encountered as a result of our work. We will review this event to learn if and how we can avoid a reoccurrence in future. Thanks for your patience, and if you have any concerns, please contact us at 780-486-8249.

In 2020, the holiday season will be very different for most of us, and very difficult for some. It’s a good time to offer support where needed and to share where we can. Yesterday, Millar Western employees met with Lori Coffey of the Whitecourt Food Bank, to present a company donation of $10,000 to support the food bank’s work on behalf of area families. In all, our seasonal donations to food banks, emergency shelters and other agencies in Whitecourt, Fox Creek and Edmonto...n added up to more than $20,000 in cash and food gifts. Some of those in-kind gifts included turkeys given by the company to employees, who gifted them in turn to people in greater need. We thank all Millar Western employees for the hard work that made these donations possible, and for the generosity and community spirit they show each year. And from everyone at Millar Western to all our friends and neighbours, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the best for a safe, healthy and happy 2021. See more

Edmonton isn’t the only place with a beautiful Christmas tree at its heart this season. Thanks to Mike Miller, Max Matthews and Heidi Harris of Millar Western and Shawn Prokipchuk of RPTL, the people of Fox Creek have a stunner of a tree to gather under - safely distanced - to celebrate the holidays and share good cheer. The crew set out on the morning of November 26th to fell, load, wrap and deliver the approximately 35-foot tree to town, where Jamie and Tyler from the Town of Fox Creek helped with the installation. Then, on December 4th, Santa led an official light-up ceremony, making a majestic tree even lovelier. Millar Western is pleased to have been able to do its part to brighten up the holidays in a year that could use a little extra sparkle. Kudos to Mike, Max, Heidi and all involved in this team effort!

Tree planting is seasonal work, but it creates thousands of jobs for planters, tree nurseries, helicopter companies & camp staff. Did you know that #treeplantin...g provided 43,500 days of work for tree planters this year? Planters tend to be younger Albertans; many are enrolled in post-secondary studies. You might say that tree planting provides a brighter future for our forests and young Albertans! #forestfactfriday #loveabforests See more

While harvesting may be the most noticeable part of what we do, it is only one part of a much bigger story. This year alone, Millar Western planted almost 6 million seedlings. With our valued contractors, community partners and forest sector colleagues, we're working to ensure forests for the future. #loveabforests
