Millbank Minute Fact #11 The present Millbank Country Hardware building was once known as Hawthorne’s Hardware. Built by William Rutherford in 1880, this two-storey building was used as a store on the main floor and a music hall upstairs. While the main part of the building has served as a hardware store for over one hundred years, other parts have also functioned as a space for many different services such as a tinsmith shop (operated out the back of the building by Norma...n Ruby); a post office (1910-1917); and, two different bank branches (1910-1934). A small frame structure was attached on the north side in 1907 to be used for a dry goods and grocery store. In 1917, it was converted into a dwelling for the then hardware store owner, Simon Fewings, and his family. For many years the hall on the second floor served as the centre for Millbank’s cultural activities (I.e. school concerts, farm demonstrations, dances, church bazaars, teas, dinners). The original stage was taken down only a few years ago.

Millbank Minute Fact #10 The present school building was built in 1908 located at the corner of Perth County Line 72 and Perth Road 121. It’s first principal was George A. Smith. He earned a salary of $515. Later when he resigned in 1924, he was earning a salary of $1200. In 1928, manual training, home economics, and agriculture were introduced. In 1931, regular music lessons began. Hydro was eventually installed in 1937, and an additional classroom was added in 1960.... Millbank Public School was closed in June of 1971 by the Perth County Board of Education. Millbank pupils began getting bussed to Mornington Central and Milverton Public Schools as a result. Tenders for purchase of the school were read on August 16th of the same year which resulted in Milverton Conservative Mennonite Fellowship Church purchasing it to use for a private school. Currently, the school is still in use under the name Morning Star Christian School.
