Definitely not the weather you want the power out for hours. Tractors and vehicles need to be plugged in. Water needs to be pumped for animals. And this farmer needs coffee. Thankfully Lyle had this generator ready to go! It’s been sitting in the shop ready to go for years and we finally pulled it out this morning and fired it up.

Winter is so much more bearable when we get these warm days. The lambs love them too!

The ever-vigilant livestock guardian dogs keep an eye out from their lookout spot. We wouldn’t be able to raise sheep or chickens without them. #dogswithjobs

Late last night I had a ewe having problems lambing. She went several hours without any progress, so I checked her and found she had a huge lamb breech. It’s very discouraging to find just a tail in the birth canal. After a lot of maneuvering I got everything in the right place, starting pulling the lamb. It was so large that it got stuck at the rib cage. I was sure I was going to loose the lamb but in the end we were successful. Lamb was weak last night and had fluid in the lungs. Was happy to see them both up this morning when I checked.

And just like that, another year starts.

‘Lil red got to do a big-girl job today - running the auger to unload chicken food into the grain bin. Seems I’ve been replaced by a wooden block, as the tractor won’t run the pto without someone sitting on the seat - newer safety feature . Did you notice the chicken doing grain sampling?
