Miller Thomson is pleased to announce that Sandra Hawes, Litigation Partner, was recently appointed as Queen’s Counsel (QC) in Alberta. The selection process for this appointment is a rigorous one, with an emphasis on qualities such as legal leadership and contributions to public life. Sandra certainly meets the high standards expected of a QC. In addition to her leadership roles as Office Managing Partner of the Edmonton office and her membership on the Firm’s Executive Comm...ittee, Sandra has a busy practice that is primarily focused on insurance defence litigation. She has also contributed significantly to her community, delivering legal education as a volunteer instructor and evaluator of principal negotiations for the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education and acting as an instructor for the Insurance Institute of Canada, teaching Insuring Against Liability. Sandra is also a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law teaching professional responsibility. Congratulations to Robert Hayhoe, who was recently recognized as a Certified Specialist in Taxation Law by the Law Society of Ontario. A leading adviser in the charities and non-profit sector in Canada, Robert also serves as Chair of Miller Thomson’s National Tax Practice Group and sits on the Firm’s Executive Committee. He provides both general counsel and specialized tax advice to charities and not-for-profit organizations across Canada. The Certified Specialist designation is significant, as those who qualify must meet established standards of experience and knowledge requirements in a particular area of law, while maintaining a high standard in their professional practice.
