Top Tips for New Year’s Exercise Everyone knows that New Year’s resolutions about exercise are the hardest to keep. Make them easier with these handy tips!... 1. Do something you enjoy it doesn’t always have to be the typical running or gym that everyone chooses. 2. View it as time for yourself don’t think about exercise just for health but as time away from family, work and technology 3. Make it a priority don’t leave it to the last minute or try and squeeze exercise in, it should be as important as the weekly shop! 4. Think long term this isn’t a short term change you need to exercise for life, not just for the next few months The attitude around exercise at New Year needs to change most people will quit their new routine within 2-6 weeks. Don’t be one of those people! #millwoodsphysio #physiotherapy #newyearresolution #healthylifestyle #fitnessmotivation #fitness #millwoods #ellerslie #yegbusiness

Best Chest Exercises! Build a bigger stronger chest having strength in this area helps us to breathe easier, perform better in our exercise and generally be stronger for our day to day tasks and work. If you don’t go to the gym there’s an easy way to strengthen your chest, arms and shoulders. ... Push Ups are one of the easiest exercises to do and they are super effective! Strength based training helps to build muscle, strengthen tendons and protect our joints as well as improving our quality of life and reducing injury and pain. 1. Push Up with your arms wider than your shoulders, perform the classic push up by pressing yourself away from the floor. 2. Narrow Push Up the only difference with this one is bringing your hands in to a very narrow position so they aren’t far apart this targets a different part of the chest and puts more focus on the triceps 3. Incline Push Up using a step or a sofa press up off a raised platform 4. Decline Push Ups again using a step or a sofa this time put your feet on the sofa. As well as strengthening the chest, this exercise conditions the triceps, back muscles and core it’s an all-round exercise. If you need help with planning some beginners strength training exercises get in touch! #millwoodsphysio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #ellerslie #rehabilitation #strength #pushup

Prevention is better than a cure! At Millwoods we are great believers in the power of soft tissue therapy and its ability to help you recover from an injury but also its ability to help prevent an injury! Professional athletes when they aren’t training are usually focusing on recovery. Their whole week is designed around getting the most out of each session but planning their activities and lifestyle to promote healing and recovery in order for them to be at their best. ... It’s not just the pros it’s also the ‘average joes’ that need to think about recovery. It might be from your exercise or it may be from your job. Any repetitive task that you place your body under has the ability to wear your body and increase your chances of injury. Your recovery is so important it dictates how you will perform in the next session. Fail to recover then prepare for the worst. We can deliver physiotherapy, massage and rehabilitation services to keep you in top condition. 3 Neck Mobility Moves! We have all been in front of a laptop more than we would like these days! Working in this way and with our mobiles can have an effect on our neck mobility and pain levels ... Reducing movement and increasing stiffness can lead to pain and injury! Follow these 3 exercises and loosen your neck off! 1. Retractions / Chin Tucks move your neck backwards and forwards just like a pigeon would. Not looking up or down but the full spine moving forwards and back. T 2. Lying down rotations lie on your back with your head flat to the surface. Rotaste and push your neck fully as far as it can go. This puts the neck in the best position to mobilise. 3. Side flexion stretches hand on to the side of your head and pull the head to one side and hold for 20 seconds repeat on the other side! Lift weights stay healthy! Exercise and proper nutrition is the best way to keep you in good health. Walking your 10k steps per day is a great start, but you should probably be doing something a little bit more to keep your body in working order. ... The world health organisation states that in order to help us age well we should have 2 x sessions of resistive exercise per week - which means something where we carry or bear weight. - Heavy manual work - Carrying heavy shopping - Weight training A great, easily accessible and attainable option is weight training. WORK & POSTURE You spend a lot of time at work make sure you get your posture and position right! Why is it important to work in a good position? ... Your body works better in its correct position, poor positioning and work setup leads to injury over a long period of time. Here are some points to consider to make sure you can be in a great position when working from home or the office: -- Correct seating get a good seat, one with a lumbar support and adjustable height setting, also consider a neck and head rest. This provides support and encourages better posture! Do not just use your sofa, kitchen chair or floor! -- Screen Height raise your screen so that the top 1/3rd of the screen is level with your eyes and also, it should be an arms length away from you. DON'T MAKE THE YARD WORK HARD WORK! Its that part of the year when the sun comes back out, its a bit warmer and nature starts to show itself again with this starts an increase in yard work. For most of us we wont work in our yards all year round which means when we do come back to doing our yard based chores we have to perform some actions, tasks and movements which we dont do usually. This can result in injury as our body isnt used to the load that we pla...ce upon it! Because of tasks such as hedge trimming, digging, weeding and working in prolonged positions with high repetition or weight our bodies develop pain! COMMON INJURIES 1. Lower back pain and strains 2. Shoulder injuries 3. Increased knee pain HOW CAN I STOP THE PAIN FROM HAPPENING? Its easy, when doing your yard work there are a few handy tips to follow: 1. Warm up before you go to work a few mobility and stretching exercises will prepare your body for the hard work ahead. 2. Share the workload if you can get help from someone to break a task in to smaller amounts. 3. Dont do too much too soon spread your work out over a few days and allow rest days 4. If working with tools such as hedge trimmers or shovels only work for short periods such as 10-15 minutes for the first week or 2, this allows your body to adapt to its new tasks. 5. Plan rest breaks - do not work flat out on the same tasks for hours on end! If you have found this helpful please Like, Share or Comment on this post or get in touch if you need help with an injury. #millwoodsphysio #yegfitness #exploreyeg #yegphysiotherapy #ellerslieplaza #ellersliefitness #ellerslieeventcentre #ellerslievillage #edmontonlife #edmontonalberta #edmontonliving #fitnessmotivation #fitness #ellerslie #millwoods #yeg #yeglife #yeglocal #yegbusiness #yegsmallbusiness #yegmassage #yegphysio #edmontonphysio #physiotherapyedmonton #physiotherapy 780-440-9003 [email protected] www.millwoodsphysio.com

Summers Here Lets Get Active! But wait this is no ordinary summer! Many of us have been INACTIVE for months and we naturally want to get outside and become more ACTIVE. We need to take care when starting to exercise because: -Reduced levels of cardiovascular fitness... -Reduced muscle strength -Reduced control of joints (proprioception) If we jump straight back to our normal routines or do excessive exercise it can result in an injury. Common injuries are ankle sprains as we have not been running, jumping or doing the same amount of activity the ankle can be at risk of this type of injury. Reduce your chances of injury by: 1. Exercising at low intensity initially doing too much puts you at a higher risk of injury! 2. Vary your activity if you have ran one day, then think about a walk or some yoga the next do not overload your body with the same exercise. 3. Have a plan and some goals! - If working yourself back to full fitness take things slow and make sure increase your exercise slowly and steadily. If you do suffer an injury to your ankle think about resting and taking weight off the joint, cold and compress treatments, try to walk normally and then come and see a physiotherapist! We can give you a clear diagnosis, provide you with hands on treatment and protective taping, followed by education and giving you the best rehab plan to keep you active! Stay safe, stay sensibly active - if you need our help we are here.
