There are two ways you can pay yourself if you are the owner of your corporation. Dividend or Salary. The choice is up to you but it is important to take into account which will benefit you most at your current life stage.... Dividends: - Are paid out after corporate income tax is paid - Have different tax rates at the personal level than salaries - Do not contribute to CPP and do not generate RRSP contribution room - Require T5 reporting Salary: - Salaries are paid to compensate for your work performed in the business - CPP premiums are required on salaries - Salaries generate RRSP contribution room - Routine source remittances and T4's are required It is important to consult a professional (like Airikka!) when determining how you will compensate yourself out of your corporation. Tax rules such as Tax on Split income can mean that compensation models that worked in the past are no longer applicable.
