Mind Body IQ 04.06.2021

How is your body coping? We’ve been served a whopper of a fear-sandwich after all. Not an easy one to swallow. There is so much to take in. Bite after bite. It’s the kind of glutenous monstrosity that gives you a belly ache just looking at it. It tastes so bad and you can’t believe you have to eat this whole thing.... But we are ALL doing this. We’ve been force fed this awful sandwich and we are processing it in our bodies. Maybe we eat sandwiches all the time, or can’t handle the gluten and usually avoid them at all costs. Whatever our capacity to digest this situation, it’s still A LOT. Our human nervous system is simply not equipped to handle this level of digestion. Our minds are firing on high alert, trying to distract us from what is in our stomachs. We are trying to hold it down. Hold it together. And still live. Searching. Coping. Adapting to the unknown every day. My thoughts today are with this processing of fear itself. This intense digestion of a new reality that we have to do. Reflecting on the way fear impacts us, each of us, individually. A reminder to us all. As with food, we all have a different tolerance for fear. But there is one piece of wisdom that is universal. Rest and digest. Now is the time to take your time. Let this hell-of-a-sandwich move through your body, do not resist. Accept it there. Feel it moving through you. Let your awareness metabolise it. Take what it can offer you and let the rest keep moving. There is always something to learn within the discomfort. Your body, more than your mind, knows what to do here. Trust it. #yourbodyissmart

Being a new mama to a now 3.5 yo has been a lot harder than I had imagined. (Anyone else seem to be crazy optimistic in the face of new challenges? ) You know that brave moment before you dive into something big? I pictured myself simply adding my new #momlife duties to my normal routine. Like. It works that way right? Just squeeze it all in? ... Ok. So no. Reality check. My body simply cannot do that pace. My creativity has officially quit the gig, and gone into hibernation. My brain can’t switch gears like I want it too. I’m fact, if you try to talk to me while any part of my hearing is focused on my toddler, my brain starts to explode. Getting through each day intact, is my new goal. It has to be. Because this is what I teach, and it’s what my body cries at me. I’m accepting I can’t do it all. And in response, I’ve been ‘over doing’ the self care. I resisted at first. And now I finally get it. If you’re like me you probably think self care is indulgent. You wish you had more time for that sort of fluffy pleasure, but you don’t. Because you (we) live in the real world. [Not always insta pretty on our side of town, that is for sure. We work hard.] Now here’s the thing. [Be warned if you’re used to getting shit flung on you left right and centre, and you happen to pride yourself in handling that shit, this might shock you.] Self care is a basic need. Brushing your teeth is self care. Washing your face. Self care. Eating. Yep. Sleeping. Duh. Get the picture? Well the amount of self care we each need depends on a few variables. Which is why our self care needs will fluctuate. With our ever changing circumstances. We need more. Or maybe less. (This is how balance works, like a pendulum swinging. See?) For me my self care used to be juggling projects, eating well, exercise, meditation, down time. I had that down. But today in mom-world I am in constant energy negotiations. I am focused on caring for others, in often high emotion peaks and valleys. It’s an endurance triathlon for my nervous system, to say the least. In being awake, I have to allow more recalibration time. You see how that’s just doing the math? What #selfcare can you give yourself today?

It is amazing how many psychological problems involve difficulties with sleep, appetite, touch, digestion, and arousal. It has never been more important to take care of ourselves. To model this to our children. To preserve not only our physical body, but also our mental health. Thank you to my friend Dr. Tom Diamond from Quiet Mind Co. for 1) encouraging me to pop out of my COVID induced hibernation (I needed this), 2) opening up a conversation about the importance of nutrition in improving mental health and 3) for highlighting the immense value of embracing lifestyle change over 'quick fixes'... and 'magic pills'. We return to ourselves as we take the healing journey. Watch the interview: https://youtu.be/H2MAd5E8bUw

My recent talk with my family doctor went like this. Me: "Can we possibly order me a hormone profile test? I want to check if I might be entering peri-menopause because I've had increased insomnia and anxiety, and I'm 44." My GP: "I wish we could, but all the tests offered through MSP are pretty much useless for that. They just aren't sensitive enough. Conventional tests really only tell us once something is already wrong, but aren't able to identify subtle changes bef...ore that." She then went on to tell me that she's really interested in learning more about the other tests, and suggested I see a local Naturopath. Hmmm. I think I know someone is what I was thinking.....(Spoiler alert: it's ME) I also know why I like her so much. What I respected in this visit was that my doctor was OPEN to what I wanted and knew about integrative options. I was really just asking her to see what might be available in Canada (compared to Australia where I'd been living), and to double check what I have presumed about all doctors all along: Whether they like it or not, they are bound in a system that treats disease, and is in no way preventative or lifestyle oriented. This conversation with my doctor was the motivation I needed to get in touch with Genova Diagnostics, and (finally) set up my Practitioner account here in Canada. Now I am happy to report I am now all set up and ready to go with @genovadiagnostics First stop, I have ordered my own hormone test. (I will show these to my doctor next time I'm in that is certain!) And I was thinking this. Would you like to follow my personal hormone story as it unfolds? I'm in a place (like many of you) where I just know my body has changed this past year. My brain works differently, I feel different. I am different. Whether it's been the stress of the move and life changes, or age, or both, I just know that seeing my hormones on paper will help me to understand better where to support myself. To bring better focus. And to give me peace of mind.... Statins are a class of drugs commonly prescribed to reduce cholesterol. How they work is by blocking the biochemical production pathway in the body. This is the same pathway that also makes our CO-enzyme Q10. Statins block both. ... And this is a problem. While cholesterol has been viewed in conventional medicine as ‘bad’, for years, and blamed for heart disease (which evidence now shows is not true), it’s always been known the COQ10 is not. In fact COQ10 is one of our bodies most important protective antioxidants. It is fat soluble (so it works in the brain and anywhere there’s fat like cholesterol) to fight off free radicals and oxidative damage. It also boosts energy, and when taken as a supplement can be incredibly helpful for relief from chronic fatigue and boosting energy (doses of 150-300mg/day). The role of cholesterol is also vast. (And if you look further at new research you’ll find it’s actually protective as well.) Cholesterol is an essential structure in the body. It forms the core component of all hormones. When we block production we are risking a massive hormonal deficit. Why COQ10 has not been prescribed alongside statins is simply negligent. If you or anyone you know are taking them, please start now to look into dietary and lifestyle changes as an alternative to reduce cardiovascular risk factors, as these are much less harmful alternatives. There is a lot of new literature that you and your doctor can discuss to learn more about new approaches. Have a look at the movie The Big Fat Fix by Dr. Aseem Mahlotra , he also has a great book called The Pioppi Diet which offers a perfect starting point for those with cardiovascular risk

Most of the problem with dairy products comes from the way it is produced and processed. Factory farms produce milk that is nutritionally corrupt, adding permeates, removing fat, destroying enzymes and effectively creating a ‘dairy-like’ product. That is no longer like the dairy we used to consume. Not to mention the ill treatment of animals, the hormones given to keep cows them producing, their poor diets (soy, sugar) and cheap feed sources, and the environmental impact of... these irresponsible methods. The first switch you should make with all dairy is to grass fed, organic and sustainably farmed. Do your research. Buy from your local health food store. Second, not everyone can tolerate dairy. Even if you think you can, you may have just adapted. There can be a number of reasons from genetics to your microbiota, and of course stress. The amount of lactase (the enzyme we make that breaks down lactose) can vary from day to day (even if you’re lactose intolerant you can make up to 14mg/day of lactase), and is impacted by the ‘rest and digest’ part of the polyvagal nervous system. You may find you can digest certain types of dairy, or that your reactions vary. You may have bloating, skin problems, excess mucus or constipation. And dairy may be the cause. Or it may be the trigger. Most people need a break from dairy to fully assess (this is what we do in both my 10 and 30 day programs). After a break, most can reintroduce dairy slowly, and see how they feel. What I’m stressing is that it really comes down to quality and quantity with dairy, and it’s not necessary for most to avoid all dairy forever. In fact, all of the 7 dairy foods I’ve listed can be very beneficial. From vitamin K2, butyrate, probiotics and 99% bioavailability in whey protein isolate. Nutritionally dairy has a lot to offer. You have to know your body. And be willing spend more on better quality. You may need to address underlying issues (ie gluten intolerance or SIBO) that may be making you react to dairy. In the end we need to take an individualised approach, so each of can craft a diet that works for us.

Unfortunately this was my case too. I spent 7 yrs with chronic back and leg pain. Had every scan, tried every physical therapy and exercise my doctor recommended. Saw every specialist. I was a good dedicated patient but nothing worked. I stood in class through my 4 years of study. I adapted my life to my pain and purchased every ergonomic device I could find. Nothing worked. I still had pain every day. ... My marriage ended in this time. I was struggling on. Then finally, although doubtful it would work, I quit eating gluten. This was 2010 around the time non-celiac gluten sensitivity was becoming more popular (I wasn’t taught this in 2004-2008). Amazing results. I was pain free within 3 months. When I think about it all now, it makes sense that my gut and nerves were inflamed. It impacted my hips (which are genetically predisposed, that was another diagnosis that took time but made sense) and as long as I ate gluten my body’s inflammation was too high to deal with. What was happening in the gut was happening everywhere. Also. It wasn’t just the gluten. I’ve tested positive more recently for a common mutation in the MTHFR genes that influence our ability to absorb folate (active vitamin B9). Suddenly the puzzle if my life’s symptoms started to come together. I was dealing inflammation for years. Each health hurdle I’d been through suddenly made more sense. Add to this childhood trauma, high sensitivity and a toxic family of origin. My state of health was a reflection of a complex set of genetics, environment and experiences. I’d been offered anti-depressants for my gut, cortisone injections for my hips, and invasive explorations of my insides. But not once was I offered nutrition guidance, prescription supplements, or tools that could connect both: healing my body AND my mind and past trauma. Chronic health problems are puzzles to be solved. Each and every one of us has the power to find the answers, and to heal. It’s not an easy journey. It cracks us wide open. We have to continue to be brave. Challenge the labels, question the prescriptions, and seek second, third and fourth opinions. Fortunately for me I was studying my degree while I was going through the worst, kept me seeking. I did find some relief through various natural therapy modalities (especially Osteopathy which is excellent in Australia). But our bodies will not heal through symptom management. Healing happens when we address the root cause, and support ourselves from all angles: food, supplements, exercise, mind and spirit. My 10 Day Program The Mindful Detox starts tomorrow and if you’re looking to learn about inflammation and the mind body connection, this is for you. https://www.mindbodyiq.com/the-mindful-detox/ Any questions let me know. Registrations for this group will close Nov 23.

For years eating smaller portions, choosing light foods, being on a ‘diet’, reducing salt and trying to adjust to bland flavours has dominated healthy nutrition. But these approaches are so misinformed. Healthy food CAN bring you pleasure. Nourishment does not equal punishment. Your hunger is not the enemy.... Going to the gym does negate ‘bad’ food. If eating healthy is a struggle, it’s time to relearn. www.mindbodyiq.com Choose from the 10 day or 30 day program. See more

Over the 10 plus years I've been practising nutritional medicine, I see one common struggle for my patients -- confusion about what it means to 'detox'. Do we even need to? What do detox products actually do? Do we really have to drink just water and juice? I've been through this myself, the market is extremely confusing and filled with double speak. [Things that sound right but are inherently flawed]. I'm here to break it down. Each day we are exposed to toxins: chemicals i...n food, by-products of digestion, stress chemicals, environmental toxins, circulated hormones, negative emotions. And. Each day our body works to clear toxins: the liver breaks things down, the gut moves things out, the lymph pushes and protects, sleep clears our brain, the kidneys maintain a delicate balance. When we 'detox', we are simply asking the body to do more of what it knows how to do. It is not about starvation, eating just plants, or taking a fancy juice elixir with a cute name. To detox mindfully, and consciously, and make a real impact in our lives. What we need to do is to rework our daily routine. Not just take a temporary break. We do this through our 3 phases, over 10 days. Remember, empowered learning is the goal. We are in control of our health, and the decisions we make every day change the course of our lives. Taking a more mindful, mind-body approach to my own health has enabled me to become my most resilient self, able to handle the changes and challenges that life has given me. I am grateful for the lessons, and also feel deeply called to share what I have learned. Ready to take the next step? Take the leap! Join me for The Mindful Detox 10 Day Program. We start as a group Nov 23, or if you prefer we can customise your start date. Details are all on my website www.mindbodyiq.com , any questions let me know in the comments or DM.

Did you know gut imbalances often show up elsewhere? As the digestive system is tightly interwoven into the pulse of the entire body. The health of our gut travels everywhere. When our gut is unhealthy, repercussions are felt far and wide.... Our brain lights up with messages. The endocrine system sends out messengers to adapt. Inflammation and immune responses are on alert. The body will adapt, and keep sending signals to heal, so long as the messages are coming. With such a deep interconnection in mind, it makes sense holistically to ALWAYS support the gut when treating overlapping symptoms. Our symptoms remind us the gut is the key to all healing. Through every hormone imbalance, mood swing, autoimmune diagnoses, fatigued work day and sleepless night. The gut is speaking. By supporting the gut we tap into the core of our health, the state of our microbiome, and the information entering the body by way of food and medicine. It’s something we can continue to do, to work on, and to get better at. Learning to listen to, and take actions that heal the gut. Is the foundation for every other protocol we might need. Could a lack of deep sleep be making you more anxious? Likely, yes. Missing out on sleep can have a broader impact than just making us tired. In fact, the more we know about sleep, the clearer it is that sleep, or lack of, really impacts our mental health and whole quality of life. It changes the chemical cocktail we live and breathe by. Leaving us less resilient, less patient, less focused, and more toxic. Where the brain was previously thought to be seperate to the detoxif...ication and lymphatic system, new discoveries have also confirmed there’s a whole network of glial cells (part of a detox system called ‘glymphatics’) , which function to clean up the brain while we sleep. In the pursuit of great skin, it’s easy to get side tracked by all the beauty and cosmetics products marketed so heavily to us. But deeper than this surface work to do is remembering the synergy that is built in to our skin’s natural functions. What our skin needs is no different to any other body organ. It’s linked to the same principles of gut health, avoiding toxins and using skin science to protect us (I love supplements to support detoxification which I talk lots about... in my 10 day program The Mindful Detox). Similarly, I’m also a big fan of topical skin nourishers like hyaluronic acid, vitamins a,c & e, and lactic acid to name a few, and I also use natural mineral based makeup which contains natural SPF. Bare skin is actually more vulnerable to environmental toxins, so I recommend to wear something light and protective everyday to keep free radicals and UV rays at bay. Then if you are in the sun more wear a higher natural SPF with either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. We also have to avoid synthetic commercial skin care as much as possible (replace it ASAP) as many hormone imbalances including early menopause are now linked to make up and skin care chemicals. Very disturbing! Shop with trusted brands at a professional aesthetic clinic or at a health food store for your skin’s chemical free ‘food’. There’s honestly so much to learn, and clean skin and beauty are a great self care tool that help us understand our body better, and connect what’s happening on the inside, to the outside. There are rumours that you shouldn’t cook with olive oil, but this isn’t true. Extra virgin olive oil is perfect for all cooking. As a mono-unsaturated fat, and a ‘fruit oil’ , it has what we class as naturally stable bonds. This means that oxygen, light and heat can affect it a little, but not a lot. Add to that an exceptionally high antioxidant and polyphenol profile, and evoo can protect itself further from being damaged during cooking. ... Why is this so confusing you may wonder? Oil is big business. The rumours about olive started when research was done comparing oils, and the olive oil used in the studies were ‘tainted’. To be classed as virgin olive oil, a product only has to contain 70% olive oil and the rest can be ‘vegetable’ oil. It’s a nasty trick used by industrial oil companies to position their oils as healthier. (Canola is the worst for this here in Canada) While tainted olive oil produces trans fats (due to the polyunsaturated vegetable oil content) and is vulnerable to oxidative damage when heated, pure high quality extra virgin olive oil dies not behave this way. Add to this, much of the olive oil on the shelves is made from rancid olives that sit too long before pressing. Quality is a huge problem. There is actually a lot of new research on this, however, the problem is that once misinformation spreads it’s so hard to undo. [It is recorded that it can take up to 17 years for new information to become mainstream.] Bottom line for you to know is that you CAN cook with evoo, and as a consumer you definitely need to make sure you’re buying an authentic product. Make you choose at the very least ‘extra virgin’ and ‘cold press’ and of course opt for ‘organic’ if you can. I recommend about 1/4 cup evoo per person in your diet. Use it in smoothies, for frying, roasting, salads and baking. It’s honestly the healthiest oil and will have a wide range of benefits, especially if you follow my last post guidelines and avoid industrial oils.
