This week I read Mexhico's #savetherestaurants article by Barrie360, and it inspired me to tell my own story. This is a call to any and all small businesses in Barrie, in Ontario, and in Canada to call for proper relief - true safety nets to prevent any more of us from falling in these harsh times. In the summer of 2018, I wanted to turn my dream into a reality. I had done research about starting up my own Escape Room business and, with the financial help from Futurpreneur, ...I was able to sign my lease in November 2019. Anyone who owns a small business knows what a rollercoaster it can be - the feeling of ecstasy to be building something of my own from the ground up, partnered with the lows of being the only one responsible for navigating hardships. After some delays in construction, Mind Buster Escape Rooms was scheduled to open on April 1st 2020. As we all know, in mid-March everyone's lives were turned upsidedown, and ours were no exception. Once things began to settle into a new normal, we were finally able to open in July, three months later than originally planned. Since then, precautions have been taken for the safety of both guests and staff, including rigorous sanitation procedures. As time has passed, we find ourselves now in an unimaginable situation. With the fear of rising case numbers, and the financial difficulties everyone is facing this year, our foot traffic has been much lower than predicted. Unfortunately, the options available for assistance seem to be basically inaccessible for new businesses like ours. And so I am calling to any and all small business owners to also speak up and tell their story, so our voices can be heard. In order to survive this tumultuous time, we must stand together. We must all support each other whether we are struggling or not. I ask for our mayor, Jeff Lehman, our premier, Doug Ford, and our Prime Minster, Justin Trudeau for help; for recognition and justification.
