A story from the museum collection for Remembrance Day Vera Cryderman and Stuart Stanley Taylor were sweethearts before Taylor enlisted with the 109th Battalion. Vera taught school in Haliburton County, mainly in Carnarvon. Stuart was a farmer from Minden, Ontario. The sweethearts exchanged numerous letters while Taylor was overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Stuart's letters reveal that while he was overseas he was not fighting on the front lines but was log...ging and laying rails with horse teams. Vera did her teaching education in one year, instead of the normal two years, while Stuart was in France, and then started teaching at different schools in the county. As well as letters, Stuart and Vera exchanged photos. Vera continually sent Stuart care packages. Stuart joked about owing a huge bill for them when he got home. Along with one of the care packages, Vera sent Stuart four pressed red maple leaves, two of which Stuart sent back in the following letters to Vera. When the war was over Stuart and Vera were married on July 11, 1919 in a small church in Carnarvon. - Text from 'For King and County' online exhibit Visit the online exhibit ‘For King and County: Soldiers of the Haliburton Highlands’ to see historic military artefacts and stories in the Minden Hills Museum and other local collections. http://www.virtualmuseum.ca//histoires_de_chez_/pm_v2.php

Day 6: Indigo and Violet We thought ‘thistle do nicely’ for the last day of the Fall Colour Challenge Thistles are native to Europe but thrive here in Canada. Their purple crowns add a flare of colour to highways, parking lots and fields - sometimes to the chagrin of farmers and gardeners. While purple is the most well known colour, thistles also come in yellow and white. They are said to be able to predict the weather, because the petals close up tight before it rains. ... Do you have anything indigo or violet growing in your backyard? Share photos in the comments or tag us! The #Fallcolourchallenge is inspired by collections at Nature’s Place. We hope it encourages you to #getoutside and learn about our environment At the end, we’ll release our Fall Colours Field Guide an activity pack for families and children of all ages

Day 5: Blue We have to admit that blue is a bit of a tricky one. But what could be more blue than a blue jay! Unlike many birds, male and female blue jays both have colourful feathers and it can be hard to tell the difference! Another thing you can count on to be blue is the sky. In the 1780s, meteorologists Horace de Saussure and Alexander von Humboldt invented a device to measure the blueness of the sky. They used their hand painted cyanometer, which looks like a ser...ies of paint chips arranged in a circle, to track scientific observations about the sky. Saussure concluded, correctly, that the colour of the sky was linked to the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. Do you have anything blue growing or living in your backyard? Share photos in the comments or tag us! Saturday’s colour is indigo and violet The #Fallcolourchallenge is inspired by collections at Nature’s Place. Day 4: Green Ferns, ferns, fabulous ferns! Victorians were obsessed with ferns. Novelist Charles Kingsley coined the term ‘pteridomania’ meaning ‘fern fever’. Difficult to grow from spores, Victorians travelled by train to harvest ferns from the forest. They brought the ferns back to elaborate outdoor rockeries they built to display their fern collections. Ferns came to symbolize a romantic ideal of ‘wilderness’ as urbanization cut people off from nature in Victorian Eng...land. The motif was used to decorate almost every imaginable surface, from plates and furniture to fabrics and jewelry. Have you got anything with fern patterns in your home? What can you spot outside that’s green? Tag us or share a photo in the comments Friday’s colour is blue The #Fallcolourchallenge is inspired by collections at Nature’s Place.
