Mindful Awareness 12.06.2021

Happy International Women's Day Week! Celebrating extraordinary women contributing to our community all week. Introducing the third in our profile series of LAM...P Award of Merit Winners 2020/2021 meet Corin De Sousa: Certified Mindfulness Teacher. Corin De Sousa is a certified mindfulness teacher who, since the pandemic, has helped many members of the Lake shore community with their mental health and physical pain. Ever since she was young, she has volunteered with the Children’s Wish Foundation and the Learning for Hope charity. Causes that drive her passion for helping others include Black Lives Matter, Indigenous rights, LGBTQ, as well as the issues of homelessness, housing affordability, and the environment in Toronto. Her path to teaching mindfulness began after being hospitalized and diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disease in 2015, with overlapping symptoms of lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome. Undifferentiated connective tissue disease is an autoimmune disorder that can affect joints and can cause persistent chronic pain and fatigue among other debilitating symptoms. After trying everything, her doctor suggested to her mindfulness as a technique to help alleviate her pain. While at first skeptical, she was inspired after completing the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program through the Wasser Pain Management Center in Toronto. Since the pandemic, she has helped members of the community and LAMP clients with their anxiety and physical pain with the help of her Mindfulness programs. While this program was originally tailored for seniors, she is now finding interest in all ages. After teaching English in South Korea, Corin completed a Master's in History at Queen's University and a post-graduate certificate in Arts Administration and Cultural Management from Humber College. Having an entrepreneurial spirit, she decided that she would start teaching her mindfulness programs online with the tools that are available: an internet connection and a microphone. This all began while approaching LAMP’s Health Promoter Jasmin Dooh about starting a wellness course online almost one year ago. Today she gives back to society by offering a free Saturday mindfulness class to the community once a month. Corin is also a favorite instructor at LAMP in Mindfulness. Congratulations Corin! Your work in healing and improving our mental well-being is having a major impact on our community. .
